Torch is good... if you put it correctly. A friend of mine and myself had it while running and I was wodering why mine was shinning as much. Half way I realised it was pointing up.
Next morning a colleague in work asked me if I was running with the torch.. as one of us had it wrong and looked like a motorbike on the path.;0D. So it works!

Mine doesnt work - changed the batteries and still not working - feeling very hard done by

Have lost my mojo - only did 5km this week - work / family / extension is taking over my running life

Torch was grand. Fairly chilly out there now tonight.

Hey all...I went missing for a week and ya'll moved on!!! Thankfully I only had 7 pages to catch up on so I'm fully caught up and ready for the off!!! Firstly thanks to every one for the welcome. I'm delighted to be part of the graduates thread after my extremely late arrival to the Novices thread and looking forward to loads and loads of support and advice so apologies in advance if I behave like a complete novice and ask questions ye asked over the past 12 months. Very briefly...I only started running in January 2016 and literally all I did was run and build up the miles...no speed work, no core work or strengthening just run, run, running. I'm ashamed to admit I have a clue what most of the abbreviations ye use mean. I literally typed my details into the Asics marathon planner and ran when I was told to. Ya'll know my reason or running the marathon so I'll answer the question from Muppet.

A: What are your next goals?
Plain and simple...To keep running. Somewhere in the midst of all the emotion behind my DCM I actually subconsciously began to like running. It was only ever meant to be "One time only" but I got bitten.

B: What type of training do you intend to do over the winter?
I actually only spoke to the hubby about this over the weekend. As I said above, I just ran so I'm gonna keep running with my group on a Tuesday & Thursday evening but I've also thought I need to join a gym and get a programme that will (A) find my core and (B) strengthen said core!!!! Any suggestions here feel free please. I plan to work fairly hard up to xmas and then enjoy myself for a few days and then back to hard work.

C: Where do you hope to see yourself in the next 12 months with your running?
Limerick in April is on the cards with a few from my running club and then Waterford in June...probably only the half again or the full if I don't do Limerick. I wanna stay injury free so I'm hoping strength and core work will go a long way to helping me. And now that the hubby has been bitten and is throwing his eyes towards DCM 17 I may just join him for the trot around lol.
I'm not focusing on times cos I'm hoping with strengthening I'll natural get quicker but more than anything I just wanna keep enjoying running.

Thanks to all involved in the Novices thread for their advice and feedback and I look forward to our future as graduates under the guidance of BG

So lads, races! What d'yiz think? Personally I'm doing the HM in Clontarf Saturday. Had a niggle in my foot up to a week ago, so I'll be taking it easy. Still looking forward to it though :)

I'll be doing the HM in Wicklow 23rd of March, the HM in Wexford the 23rd of April, and the HM in Clontarf again 1st of July next year. I paid for the three of them in a bundle, the price was ridiculous so I snapped it up. Cannot wait :D

Full Marathons, I've paid for none of them yet but the ones I'm keeping a serious eye on are the Great Limerick Run on the 30th of April, the Longford Marathon on the 27th of August, and of course our near and dear true blue DCM next October!

I'm really excited with the direction I'm taking my running, these halves and fulls in individual counties in and around Leinster will give me a chance to see more of each county than I ever have before in a unique way. Really excited.

Also, haven't plugged it in about a year so may as well now, I write a running blog. Initially started it up for the DCM, but after that I figured I still love running so I'll keep the blog going. Here's a wee link: https://runintherainblog.wordpress.com/

Ok, so I think most people have moved over at this stage. Welcome to the johnny-come-latelys and thanks for completing The Muppet's questions. I'm going to look at all your goals and write a post over the weekend with some general advice about how to go about achieving them and staying focused over the winter. If you haven't had the chance to complete the questions yet you might do so over the next couple of days. In the meantime....Happy Friday

Well not much action from me this week one run on Tuesday then had a mental couple days in work.

Heading off to Berlin for the weekend so plan to get back into it next week; also organising with Donore Harriers to go down to their training session on Wednesday week.

For anyone doing Clontarf....good luck and look after yourself out there....looks like it is going to be as cold as last year.....enjoy the soup!!

Feck all running done this week, have been super busy in work, coupled with some dodgy nights sleep and the weather being icky , basically cause I have a large lazy streak so taking advantage of my original plan to only run as and when I felt like it with slow easy kms for the three weeks following DCM. Back on the wagon from Monday :D

I am the exact same - no idea what strides are or anything like that - I just run - I have one pace and one pace only and thats what I do .
I do a plank everyday for my core - I do it just before bed everyday its a habit now - its great for your core ( really tightens up the tummy too ) I also do a reverse bridge - again good for your core. I have a few other exercises I do every day that my physio gave me to strengthen my glutes

I'll cover this over the weekend. If there's any other terminology anyone is not familiar with please shout and I will cover it (or find someone else who will :D)

You might think you have only one pace but I can assure you that is not the case if you're prepared to change up your routine and embrace some new training ideas. We'll address that over the coming weeks once you're all recovered and raring to go.

BTW, these posts, while they might quote a particular graduate, are meant for everyone. 'You' in general means you plural. It won't be possible to comment in detail on every individual's running but you can all learn from eachother's questions and observations.

Bring it on BG. I'm looking forward to it. My biggest regret was not finding this group from the start of my marathon training thus missing huge advice and with running a home, job and 3 sons with a better social life than me it really would be too hard to start reading the thread from the start. For me it's abbreviations the guys use that I don't know. Oh...and basically what do do aside from run :pac::pac::pac:

Safron I must get going on planking...I'm pretty sure the gym dude will put it in a plan for me!!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,086 ✭✭✭Fbjm

Clontarf half marathon, scrap that plan. Felt a niggle in my injury when I'd already travelled to Clontarf, knew that if I ran I'd just exacerbate it all over again and I can't miss any more work. So left the start line twenty mins before I was due to run and returned home. Christ that was hard to do. Everyone who's told me I'd be mental to run with my bad foot, yiz were right, so cheers.

    15k this week.

My first park run since March - first event since that little spin we did at the end of last month. Didn't bring the watch as I'm taking it handy and have no targets. Ran very gently. Not that cold at the announcements stage, quite a nip in the air once we got under way, in the shade. Really felt it in the hands. Lovely blast of sunshine after the first main turn, made quite a difference having the glow of the heat. Good buzz after finishing, happy to be out for PR again.

Went for some gym work, followed by seasonal shopping.

  • Registered Users Posts: 126 ✭✭Safrongirl

Well attempted 5km again this evening on threadmill - again attempted to speed things up a bit here and there but now I am just itching to get out for a nice longish run. I am of on Tuesday morning and kids at school so hopefully I will get outside for a run.

Shiny new thread! What did I miss? I'm just back from two weeks in Bali where I did no running and much drinking of bintang. It did take until last week for my right knee and foot to loosen out, but I'm all good to go now! With regards to the questions in the OP, my goal at the moment is to run Jingle Bells and reassess from there. Post-marathon determination and elation has brought all sorts of ideas and plans to the surface but nothing concrete yet. Looking forward to being inspired by everyone here :D

Brilliant thread already. You are in the bestest hands with Dorothy BG. I am so looking forward to your transformation into cross country runners :D Oops, was I not meant to say that yet?! ;)

Seriously, listen up and do what is suggested and you won't go wrong!

How's it going guys :D Congrats once again on the DCM :)

I've been a bit of a disgrace since then. I done a very slow 5k two weeks ago but in general, I've ate/drank far, far too much. I've definitely piled on a few pounds since - we'll call it a post marathon hangover!

But today was the day I finished with all of that. I went for a nice a slow 10k around some backroads this afternoon. I really enjoyed it, absolutely beautiful scenery and conditions. Feel like a new man already because of it! Gonna start training for Belfast in May, it gives me a plenty of time but I can ease my way back into things without too much pressure. If there's any small races in the locality, I'll look to take part but the mental pressure of the marathon is gone - it's doable and the next one will be about getting the time down.

For now until Christmas - I'll be out running to shed some weight, get the nutrition on point and mainly to keep the fitness up before I start a proper training plan in the New Year. Here's to running in general - god bless it!

I was going to talk to you about S.M.A.R.T. goals (or whatever the latest acronym is ) but I realised you all know about setting goals and achieving them. Every one of you graduates has done that by training for, and completing, a marathon.

In the short-terms some of you have time-based goals and are chasing PBs, others want to reach particular mileage goals and a few have more general goals of simply getting back into some sort of running routine. Some of you have mentioned focusing on strength & conditioning (which I wholeheartedly approve of!), losing weight and/or improving nutrition and one or two have mentioned ‘the dark side’ (careful now :P). Some of you plan to join a club. A few want to start a training log. All good.

It is important to have a goal to get you out the door and give a purpose to your running. If you don’t have something to aim for it’s too easy to become complacent, lazy even, and that can become a slippery slope. It doesn’t mean that you pursue your goal relentlessly at all costs i.e. if you’re unwell, injured etc. but it might mean getting out of your comfort zone on occasion.

If I could suggest one thing, it’s that you aim for consistency. I don’t mean doing the same thing day in day out, but I do mean that you follow a structured plan. It often happens that people bite off a bit more than they can chew and are all gung ho for a week or two before the realisation dawns that they can’t keep it up and the good intentions go out the window. You’re better off starting conservatively and gradually working your way up to whatever it is you want to achieve. Sound familiar :pac::pac::pac::pac: ?

I’ll leave it to the Good Witch of the North for some sage advice:

Thanks for the advice BG. The goal for 'getting you out the door' is true I think. Very easy not to get out for a run if you're not training for something with a finish line.

I'm sitting here trying to plan out what marathons I'm doing for 2017. It won't be decided tonight but I'm thinking three - spaced out nicely. One here and two abroad. Exciting stuff for a Sunday night :P

Hope I'm not too late to the thread - I've been following it from the start but hadn't really settled on answers to TM's questions!

    What are your next goals?

I've been struggling with motivation for the last few weeks so all I want to do is get back to consistent running. I could also do with shifting the few pounds I've put on since Berlin!

What type of training to you intend to do over the winter?

Mainly easy running for now. I want to build up a decent base over the next few weeks, and then start a half marathon training plan in January.

I'm signed up for a 10k race this Sunday, but I'm in no sort of shape for it, so expectations are extremely low. Hopefully will have a much better crack at a 5k race on 27th December.

Where do you hope to see yourself to be in 12 months with your running?

I'd like to have run a sub-20 5k, sub-42 10k, and sub-1:35 half marathon. Very unlikely I'll do a marathon next year, but hopefully I'll be gearing up for one in Spring 2018.

This really strikes a chord, as this is exactly what happened to me after the Berlin marathon. Since then, my weekly mileage has looked like this:

    5
    3
    15
    26
    30
    27
    8
    17

I think if I'd taken a few weeks off entirely, I'd be in a much better position now.

I went ahead and booked Rotterdam last night for early April. It's meant to be a nice and flat course. Great excuse for a small break too.

Thinking of Waterford which is near the end of June.

Then it's either Dublin or Toronto in October. I'd hate to miss Dublin as the experience was that good - but we'll see how it pans out.

Hopefully it goes to plan, injury wise etc but I'm glad I settled on Rotterdam. It gives me over four months to prepare and it will keep me focused on a plan - which I definitely need heading into the Christmas and New Year.

Yeah I hear you - 'only two' :D. I couldn't lay a glove on 15 miles before I started training for DCM. Two or three marathons in a year is all good!

Thanks for sharing that TG , I have been wondering if I'm not running as much as I should but on reading that I'm not feeling as guilty as I was.

I have a slight pain in my lower back the last two days, it's not running related but I have had lower back issues in the past so I think I'll take it easy again this week.

Bit late to thread but excited to be part of it! Came across the novice thread too late but am looking forward to hearing everyone's advise etc

    What are your next goals?

I am feeling very motivated but think my body is telling me to calm down! Took full 10 days off after DCM and have done 5 x 5ks since but my feet and hip are at me!! Really wanted to push on this week and increase mileage but am thinking I might take the week off and hopefully feet and hip will start to feel better! Am hoping to do aware 10k in December but just planning on running it rather than racing it. My first goal will be the Raheny 5 Mile in Jan, hoping for PB Sub 44 min, then Trim 10 Mile in Feb, and the big one Half in Bohermeen in March, hoping to finally get sub 2 hrs !

What type of training to you intend to do over the winter?

Run 2/3 time a week and couple of classes in the gym. I want to get back into the track but I'm going to wait until I have these niggles sorted as I find speedwork can aggrevate injuries

Where do you hope to see yourself to be in 12 months with your running?

Having suffered from injury for most of last year, my training for DCM was all about getting miles on the legs, I did no speed work at all! I hope I can get back into track, doing a bit of speedwork and improve my times!

I was out for 8 months with Plantar Faciitis before I started training for DCM, I'm really paranoid about injuries! Both my feet are sore after every run since DCM and am terrified it's PF again !! Hoping it's just recovering from DCM and will be ok in a few weeks !

Great to see this thread set up. I haven't ran since the marathon. My feet still aren't right. Back to the physio on Thursday so hopefully some treatment will help. I'll answer the questions over the next few days. I'm going to have to start doing some kind of non running exercise to try and keep up the fitness.

:eek:Hips still not great. The last time I ran was the Run in the Dark, I dropped back to 5k on the night but had no pain after the first 2k so I wish I tried the 10k.

I've just purchased an aqua running belt from Irishfit.eu, it only cost €8.99 so I'll try that out a few times a week and see some pool running makes a difference.

I've put on half a stone since the marathon - I just cant snap out of carb-loading mode  Considering my average weekly running is 3-6 miles I'd better start behaving this week, any extra weight wreaks havoc on my knees :(
I think the problem is that I miss having a plan so I think I'll look for a good 10k improver plan and try get my time down, any recommendations very gratefully received :)

I'm declaring an amnesty ! All the (running-related ;)) terms you always wanted to know about but were afraid to ask. Well now's your chance, ask now or forever hold your peace (not really, but it would be very handy if we could get this all answered in one place!). So you have 24 hours, then I'll post a reply.
I'll get the ball rolling.....(please quote the most recent reply to this post, delete the quote marks and add in your own question so we have one post with all the questions, thanks)

    1. What are strides and why should I do them ?

Oh there was shorts on too.

Hands was the last thing to warm up, I was already debating in the head what type of gloves I would need for this winter but after almost 3 miles the thoughts switched to gloves would not be needed.

Couldn't agree more! Some things just can't be unseen.

For girls and boys or just for boys? I don't wear shorts over my 2XU compression tights :o

I was thinking just the boys. I still try to convince my cycling brother that he isn't a pretty sight without shorts!

Don't know what the marathon is after doing to me. I did 5 miles at a fairly handy pace yesterday and was in a heap by the end of it. It's like I've gone back in time 12 months.

Laughed when I read this! Agree completely. There was a lad in the HM this year wearing brown tights with no shorts  I made it my business to get past ASAP. Come to think of it, maybe that's why I left Murph_D behind!!!

Hey All, apologies for not posting in here yet, been busy buying a house :-) will post answers to the questions soon. Took two weeks off, legs felt fine, I just decided to take it easy but really missing the running now so will start easing myself back in now. The weather seems worse than last Nov when I had just started running so I am not looking forward to going out in this but sure, it has to be done!

OK Bunnygirl - another on my plan was Drills ?
So what is a drill in running terms ? for example it had 7 drills + 3 strides - 25 seconds each
    No idea what that means

Have quoted BungyGirl's list and added Safrongirl's questions so that it does get lost, as well as my own.

    1. What are strides and why should I do them ?
    2. What is a drill in running terms? For example plan had 7 drills + 3 strides - 25 seconds each.
    3. What are the differences between tempo run; lactate threshold run; aerobic run? Or are they similar just different plans use different terms?

    merci beaucoup.

And folk don't forget BG's instructions: "please quote the most recent reply to this post, delete the quote marks and add in your own question so we have one post with all the questions, thanks"

Any chance you were going too fast ? (You can be honest, this is a safe environment :)) . How was your perceived effort during the run ? What was the pace like compared to your pre-marathon easy runs ?

    5. Is there a dictionary for running lingo like quads, etc?

I got out for 4 easy miles this evening , no complaint from my back during the run , I had forgotten how enjoyable running in the cold is once you get going. Was like an onion going out tonight will drop a layer next time.
