OK, got the TV but I don't have a Pro yet. Any games that make good use of the upscaling? FIFA looks worse in 4k.....

First thing to do is get smart iptv app and get sorted with iptv :o

The app is free for the first week and then €5.50 to keep it for ever on the tv. It's in your app store on the tv.

Yeah, have that sorted already

    Any opinions on the below?

    https://powercity.ie/product/49XF9005

    Seems to review well.

Also looking at this too, which seems to be slightly better for gaming but not sure its worth the extra for that alone

My current TV gave up the ghost last night so will be pirchasing soon. Guess that PC upgrade i had planned will have to wait, bummed:(

At the same screen size, there's only €50 in the difference, so the Samsung isn't that much dearer in that sense really.

In the same sense the Sony is comparable to a Q8, and cheaper. It's also got Fully array vs the Q6 which is edge lit.

So not an apples to apples comparison, which was supposed to be my point.

The samsung at 49" has a different panel than the 55" . The 55" and up have a native 120hz panel like the sony, the 49" has only a 60hz panel.

The one reason i havent just went and bought the sony is that at 1080p/60hz input lag is 40ms+,which is a bit higher than id like. I have a pro and a PC though so maybe i just should either run it @120hz at 1080p or 4k where the numbers are <24ms.

The samsung while being more expensive and slightly worse in a lot of ways than the sony has extremely good input lag figures and the latest in game mode tech seemingly. It nearly halfs the input lag of the sony at every resolution/framerate.

Guess my problem is i dont know how much input lag is "too much input lag". Ive read a few places <35ms seems to be desirable.

Then theres also the samsung NU8000 to look at,cheaper again but doesnt really do stuff as well as the other two from reviews but is awesome for games seemingly.

Thing is most TV in their gaming modes are above 40/50, Samsung is the outlier with it's stupidly good low input lag. Gaming PC monitors tend to be under 5ms, but you've to practically give up HDR there as the standard is new on them so even if you see HDR on a set it's probably only pseudo HDR.

Something to note if planning on using it with a PC, it can accept a 1440p signal. Not sure you can use the 120Hz on the Pro.

Reading this below. for the Pro and 4k/1080

    https://www.rtings.com/tv/discussions/DB7gDBwEESHek7NN/ps4-pro-xbox-one-x-and-input-lag-on-the-x900f4

They seem to think that the pro will output an 4k signal by default, so if it's a native 4k game or an checker-boxed upscalled one or even a HD game the pro will package it as a 4k signal and upscale accordingly. So it's the 4k @ 60hz lag you'd be looking at which is 24.

Ye i had a good look at their reviews and comparisons. Its only the 1080p/60hz that could be a problem. Which as you say may not be an issue anyway with the Pro. I can force 1080p/120hz while using the pc also so it actually should be fine. Now if i could force 1440p/120hz using the PC that would be awesome:)

I think im just gonna grab the Sony.

Legs look good, they were nearish the centre and spanning out. Was looking at it too now, and thinking I'd get away with propping it on a deep strong shelf on wall near foot of bed.

    How big was the stand?

I always think Battlefield 1 looks unbelievable on it. The only drawback is you have to play Battlefield 1.
Ah I like BF1 but got tired of it relatively quickly.

    Borderlands 2 is very colourful.

Previous stand was 80cm and the new one is 100cm.

The legs at their widest point are about 99cm so the new stand just about fits it. Givin the room its in i dont have room for a bigger stand than 100cm.

    Hey folks,

Considering the 3 tvs above. The wife is leaning towards the philips for 639 due to the price. I have explained terms like latency and low input lag and she understands where I am coming for but since I cant actually find any information regarding input lag for any of the 3 I was hoping for a little input. Has anyone tried any of these with their PS4 pro (or PC or Xbox)? do you have the actual input lag figures or just a general "plays fine for me have no bother with it".

    Any help appreciated

Philips tvs have been terrible for years. Bought a crt from them and it ended up having magnetic interference from its own speakers as it was improperly shielded. They tried to fob me off by saying it was because it was beside a hifi or similar which it wasn't. Was still getting the interference on a screen filled with static and nothing else plugged in or magnetic nearby.

If you you went for the xf 9005, you can reverse the legs if you want. Leg marked 'L' can go on right and vice versa. It just narrows the front footprint. Didn't do it with mine but you can as far as I know.

I thought that was the case too but the one i got has plastic notches on the back to stop you doing it. Might be a revision because the TV is the XF9005 and most places online say you can do it too.

The new stand is 100cm wide and its pretty much exact width of the stand. Maybe a cm either side wiggle room

I've the same TV XF9005 and my stand is the same size.

I'd recommend one of these as my set up is rock solid now.

it's so difficult to set up tvs to optimise the 4k/hdr thingy. I've had a Sony 4K TV for months and there's a marked improvement in the picture. Found an option to enable the 4K (or something) over the weekend. On Destiny 2 it looked a little better but when I switched to Mafia III my eyes nearly fell out of my head. It looks so much better.

Its definitely worth calibrating your TV as well. :) You need to enable the HDR settings or each of the inputs and also on your consoles.

Just to mention, only two ports of the four hdmi ports on the SOny XF are ARC/HDR enabled so make sure you put your console onto those. Samsung are pretty similar and many TV sets only have one HDMI port that can put out Hdr.

Check out RTINGS.com for your TV calibration settings.

yeah thanks, it's been a gradual process of tweaking. Only ports 2 and 3 on my tv are HDMI appropriate. 3 displays ARC on screen but not 2. I have the HDMI cable in 2 but didn't notice any change when flipping over to 3. This may be because I haven't 3 calibrated.

I also had the colour way too high after watching a "how to..." video on youtube

What model TV have you? I found printing the RTINGS model specific pages made it easier for me.

Just make sure you turn on the 'Enhanced format' tab for HDMI signla format for each of the HDMI ports individually.

Here is the guide I used and it might help you.

Yup that was the thing I changed over the weekend, hadn't the enhanced format enabled. Didn't realise you had to do it for each port must try it on 3 when I get home, thanks for that.

There should be one button a technophobe like me could flip to enable the optimal gaming set up. I think its an X900e

That guide above should point you in the right direction. Just remember for low lag, you need to start with the 'gaming ' preset and work from there for that input and also make sure you have the settings enabled on the console(s) as well.

I came across a user friendly table a while back so I will have a check for that and post it here if I find it.

    Try this also:

    http://best-tv-settings.com/tv-settings-sony-x900e-xe90/

Taken from rtings "connect the console to HDMI port 2 or 3 and then enable 'Enhanced Format' as shown above. select the 'Game' picture mode on the TV. Then follow these settings:

    Brightness: Max
    Color: 50
    Contrast: 90
    Gamma:
    0
    Black Level: 50
    Black Adjust: Off
    Adv. Contrast Enhancer: Off
    Auto Local Dimming: High
    X-tended Dynamic Range: High
Color Temperature: Adjust to your preference
    Live Color: Off
    All 'Clarity' settings disabled
    Motionflow: Off"

Looking for a non huge tv for ps4 pro to have hdr. Atm would be in bedroom, either wall mounted or on dresser, but would hopefully move to a games room.
Is there anything good around 40 inch?

  • I got a PS4 Pro/RDR 2 bundle so I'm looking for a good monitor/TV. Thing is I don't have much room so something around 25" is all I can manage. But hey on the positive side it should keep the price low? I'd only be using it for the PS4 Pro and I have an Alienware Alpha R2 I mainly use for Kodi. Not sure I need a "TV" given that I won't be using it as a TV. I literally have no idea where to start so any advice much appreciated!

Just get a PC monitor. Probably the cheapest option.
I'm doing a lot of traveling at the moment so I'm just playing RDR2 on a 21 inch monitor. It's a 9 year old Dell monitor but it's 1080p and the game looks great on it.
The main issue is there is no monitor so I just plug headphones into the controller.

Thanks but looking to improve on what i/we have already.
I have an old 37 inch 1080 but would like to embrace this hdr/4k optionso f the ps4pro.

Majority of games don't run at 4K anyway so a decent 1080p or 1440P monitor (or TV) is fine, games will still look excellent and hugely improved on base PS4. I use mine (and the one X) on a 1440P monitor. This is a 4K "HDR" monitor for £300 which is a great price but not sure how good or otherwise the HDR is.

A proper 4K HDR10 PC Monitor would literally cost you nearly the same as a 50" 4K HDR10 TV!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,409 ✭✭✭xtal191

Unfortunately the Pro doesn't support 1440p and is meant to look terribly blurry on 1440p monitors.

Pro outputs 4k even for non 4K or 1080p games. if you have a 1440p monitor then the Pro will output 1080 and the monitor will upscale that.

The HDR standard on monitors isn't that old so there's only a few out and more are coming. The standard isn't linked to resolution so you could get a HDR600 (400,1000) screen that's 1440p.

If you want a monitors best to wait as said a HDR 4k one is going to cost close to a 50" mid-high TV.

With black Friday and the next month of sales approaching just thought I say this so people are comparing like for like as most reviews and comparisons are US based.

Samsung have been a bit creative again with their European models. The Q8 in Europe has 3 variants. The 2 released earlier were a curved version and a flat version, both of these were edge lit unlike the single US Q8. The third variant is the same as the US Q8 and came later, so if you see one on sale that is a bit more that's probably it.

If the model number reads Q8FN in it it's the edge lit flat, a Q8CN is the curved, and a Q8DN for the full array.

To get proper specs though check the tv's in the richer Sounds website or look it up on https://www.displayspecifications.com/en

I have a Samsung 8 bit tv, different model to the one above, and I think it's fantastic and for the price and it suits your needs then sounds good!!

    Thanks,
looking through both richersounds and that displaspec site, most of the ones i can see for sale tend to be 8+fcr.
I wonder is it just the price range/size that means all the ones im looking at are like that?
Looking for sub 500 and as far under 50 as i can go (bedroom tv).
Even going as far as 1000 euro, most of the panels seem to be 8+fcr?

Looking at this coming up to Black Friday. I've done a fair bit of research. Has surprisingly low input lag(13 Ms) decent interface. 8bit panel (+frc) which I'm told shouldn't be a problem for gaming.

Anyone any first hand experience with it ?

I'm sure your research has you prepared but that set doesn't really do HDR, it's not capable of displaying a correct HDR image. It will accept a HDR signal and try it's best. Minimum for "decent" HDR would be the NU8000 or probably whatever the equivalent Currys model number may be.

Don't touch Phillips with a barge pole, use something longer.
