Why does Apple forget my iMac?

I've had my iMac for over 2 years with the same Appleid.
Every now and then Apple decides it is a new device. I just logged into iCloud for the first time in a couple of months and had to do the verification procedure. Also once in a while I am asked if I trust this computer when I plug in my iPhone.
    Seems odd.

Is it just annoying you for the iCloud password all the time? Or are you deliberately logging out? Because if you are logging out for long periods it's probably going to re-verify when you log back in. Especially if you have upgraded or reinstalled in the meantime.

Or are you talking about iMessage/FaceTime? Because anytime you have to activate that your phone again you can expect to get a load of pop-up dialogs and emails on your Mac about it.

I'm not deliberately logging out. I'm just wondering why/how Apple decides my iMac is a new device. On iCloud my iMac is shown as one of my devices.
I'm not annoyed, I'm are puzzled.

I'm not sure. Can you give more details? Where do you get the message that your Mac is a new device? What does it say? Is it just in iTunes?

Anytime iMessage/Facetime is activated you'll get a dialog on your Mac about new device added, etc. It's pretty messy.

If you have two step or two factor authentication enabled, you'll also have to verify the device every time you log into the iCloud or Apple ID web interface. This is also very annoying. You can tell it to remember, but I'm not sure how well it works.

Your iPhone may ask you if trust the computer after an iOS update, I'm not sure, maybe some else can confirm?

There might also be a problem with iTunes re-authorising any iTunes purchased content you have. If you have content from a non-Irish store this can also cause problems.

OK, here is more strange Apple stuff. I have had an iPad Mini for about a year and have regularly backed it up to iTunes and to iCloud. Today iTunes said "Your iPad has never been backed up to iCloud." When I look on the iPad the latest iCloud backup was 13 November 2016.
Also, in iTunes it says I am on iOS 10.1.1 and then says a newer version of iOS, 10.1.1 is available. I always update iOS directly on my devices because it uses less GB and is quicker than doing it through iTunes, so maybe this is causing confusion there.
All my devices [iMac, iPad 3, iPad Mini and iPhone 6S] are logged into the same AppleID. In iCloud Settings it shows all of them except the iPad 3.
There is something flaky going on here... .
