Spotted people doing a count of vehicles crossing the Grand Canal this morning. I'm going to guess that today is the day they put together their stats for the mode of transport figures.

It's a fine dry day and there are a lot of people out on bikes so it would be nice to see an increase in the figures cycling into town. Can anyone recall the figures from the last count? I think it was a bit of a miserable day which suppressed the figure a bit.

As with casting your vote, you should cross early and cross often!

    http://www.dublincity.ie/main-menu-services-roads-and-traffic-traffic-dublin/traffic-cordon-count?language=ga

10,893 cyclists last year (this doesn't include Dublin Bike users) which was 5% increase on 2014 but 125% increase since 2006. Not hugely far behind LUAS numbers which were 12,503

They only count from 7am to 10am? I should have done a few loops! I thought I could make up for it on the way home. Still, there were a lot of cyclists on the road this morning.

I see a lot of people nowadays are going around without their indoors helmets on. I think it's terrible, Joe. Terrible!

If only. Complete darkness, disorientation and being basically asleep saw me walk into a corner wall.

I'd be a disaster on rollers. Hoping the count is high today/this week.

Steady, strong rise in cycling. Gradual decline in private cars. Misleading graph though, because (I assume) one bus gets a count of one, one car gets a count of one. But one bus at rush hours contains about sixty people, most cars contain about one person at all times.

very interesting. The increase in cyclist numbers almost completely offsets the decrease in car numbers. A pretty obvious message in that, IMO. If the numbers of cyclists doubled, thats a potential 10k less cars. Not gonna happen unless they invest in infrastructure, police cycle lanes, etc.

I'd imagine the bike-to-work scheme got lots more people out on bikes too. Yet another reason to keep extending it.

Where's the west and east boundaries of the cordon?

Do they take a count during Summer too? Would be interesting to see the drop off in season.

It's in the document linked to. There are 33 counting points.

DCC do a different count in June I think, this includes counts at Dame Street/Georges St junction.

[edit] May actually, from link above

In addition, every May there is a cordon count survey carried out at approximately 60 locations encapsulating a much wider cordon, for example; in addition to the cordon formed by the Grand & Royal Canal, further counts are carried out along the Liffey Bridges between Heuston Station and the East Link Bridge and Parnell Street and St. Stephens Green.

Schemingbohemia's links contain the fine detail of the previous counts that were performed at each of the canal crossing points. The buses are counted singly, but it does mention that Dublin Bus performed a count of passengers on the day too. Doesn't mention where this information is as far as I can tell. There is a headcount for car occupancy. Sure enough, about 65% to 70% of all cars only had a single person in them on the way in to town.

Someone a bit more skilled might be able to copy this material into a post but it shows an infographic numbers of people coming into city centre. The NTA get passenger figures from the transport companies, you'll often also see people getting onto buses and counting pax.
