I think they should use this:

It make great fun when they are approaching cyclists.

A police siren would be great!

Admittedly, it's a good idea. I and many others instinctively cross the road when I don't hear a noise. I've seen plenty of people walk in front of my bike as well without checking.

I think noise on an EV is fine when we have more ICE's than EVs. One advantage of EVs is reducing noise pollution, but if there all going around making crazy noises it seems a bit crazy. When people get use to EVs and they are the mojority of cars on the road then no noise I would say !

SO either a recorded V8 sound, Or ice cream van music?

Ridiculous, part of the benefit of electrics was reducing noise pollution in towns and cities. Part of an anti EV movement. That's all.

Imagine thousands of electrics emitting an electronically emitted noise ? it's not going to be pleasant and as far as I'm aware this noise must stay on all the time below about 40 odd kph even when stopped. This is nuts and should not be allowed.

First think I'd do is take a snips to the speaker wire.

ICE cars kill far more people so by that logic there should be a big flashing light on every ICE car and a siren, just because an EV hits someone doesn't mean it's because it's quiet, if it's an ICE then it's because driver or pedestrian error.

Make pedestrians remove headphones and make it illegal to use a mobile on a public street.

the rules in EU land will begin in 2019 and all EVs will have to admit a sound that is at least as loud as the quietest ICE car in the power class. so much for the end to noise pollution

The Anti EV movement alive and well, this should be challenged , the benefits of ev's was removing noise pollution and local pollution. Ridiculous. But I said this was coming a long time ago.

Thousands of electrics emitting noise isn't going to be nice...... ICE's all emit a similar rattle, different electronic sounds , different pitches and whines is going to be horrific.

Noise of ICE cars is a non-issue. They are currently quieter than domestic appliances. Motorcycles the same. To the extent that in the motorcycle sound test, if you knock off the engine and coast past the dB meter, the difference is negligible: tyres and road noise are close to the limit.

Cars would I daresay be even quieter, as they have bodywork to shield any mechanical noise(s).

    Or the Lexus LFA.

Making ev's sound like ICE is just laughable, what Idiot would sit in an EV that makes the noise of an ICE ?

One day the people of the future will laugh there arses off at this early EV period.........

Any stroll around Dublin city will completely counter your argument , cars at city centre speeds do not generate much wind or tyre noise , but the nature of stop start city driving , generates significant engine noise due to acceleration and gear changing etc.

EVs in the same environment are essentially silent , not just quiet , which is why the EU etc wish to legislate in artificial sound

Note that modern cars typically admit upto 90 dbs under acceleration , your modern washing machine is typical 55 db , decibels are of course logarithmic , so 90 is orders of magnitude louder then a washing machine.

What about blind people? They need to hear vehicles approaching so need noise to be safe.

What about all the people who get hit by ICE cars be they blind or not ?

Need noise to be safe my fecking arse.

It's accepted that ICE cars will no doubt eventually be involved in collisions with pedestrians and so too will electric cars. It's often a fault of the pedestrian, so do you then ban pedestrians ? make cars sound their horn indefinitely ? to what end do we go ?

Remember, noise is a form of pollution as is light.

They should make it a farting sound so we can all laugh at those ridiculous machines that can't get far under their own steam.

    ICE. Not defeated! :)

This is the argument you hear most often against silent EVs.
Are there any other arguments against?

What percentage of people are either completely blind or have a severe visual impairment?
When was the last time someone saw a blind person crossing the street/road somewhere other than at a pedestrian crossing?

It seems to me that legislators are making a decision for a very small percentage of cases that will affect everyone else negatively.

Not defeated: " yet" , but soon , steam engines hung on for a decade after being superceeded technically. these days you see them in museums.

Either is preferable to the current "no seriously, diesel can sound sexy" soundaktor treatment

Do you think blind people just assume the way is safe if they can't hear anything and walk out with their fingers crossed? Good way to cause an accident, with a cyclist if nothing else.

A blind person with no escort can cross at a pedestrian crossing, they make unambiguous noises when it is safe to go.
