Workshops & VAT

Hey guys,

I run design workshops with a collective I am part of. We are VAT registered. Up until now we have been charging 0% VAT on the workshops, as we were told there is no vat on education. Are we in the right doing this, or have we been misled?

Depends completely on what is done in the workshop. We used to run workshops and they were at the reduced rate. Best talk to an accountant to see whether what you are doing is eligible for the education exemption.

We work with photographers to in designing, printing and binding a photobook of their images.

If you ring revenue they should be able to tell you over the phone save you paying an accountant. As far as I know though it depends on whether they receive a education certificate at the end of the course for it to be classed as training

There was a general view that all training was exempt.

Finance Act 2015 restricted this general exemption so that a lot of private sector providers don't fit within the exemption.

Go talk to an accountant.

It would appear not to be exempt!
