Buying in Duty Free and not flying ?

Hi all, I know there's been a few threads here about this but I couldn't find any recent ones.

Ok so I'm going to buying a new MacBook Pro and being a student I'm trying to search around for the best deal! I've noticed that they are significantly cheaper in Dublin airports duty free at Dixon's.

I have a plan to buy a €7.99 flight to Newcastle, check in go through security buy the laptop and leave again without flying.

Has anyone did this before or can anyone tell me whether it's possible or not to simply leave after going through security and will I be able to take the laptop with me.

    Thank You.

Black Friday and Christmas deals not work out the same price and save the hassle?

Why don't you just take the flight and return on the next one?

You can't just exit the secure area with a tax free product.

No it's still way cheaper and most apple products don't go on sale on Black Friday

But could I just 'miss my flight' ?

No. You would have to pay the tax on the product. You can't just exit the secure area you would have to be escorted, via customs.

There may be a protocol whereby the security people will send you down some channel where you have to go past customs if you are not flying - specifically to stop the practice you've described. Revenue tend to be wise to this type of stunt.

In US airports it's easy to get from airside to landside with no issue, did it myself unintentionally once but you can't do that there, you have to talk to someone to be shown where to go.

And there is no duty free if you are travelling to the UK. Unless they have the reduced price for everyone?
How much are you going to save?

With the exception of tobacco and alcohol, most airport outlets are tax free

Okay thanks for replies - guess my genius idea wasn't so genuis after all haha! I'll just save up more and pay the tax.

the other thread was locked presumably because someone mistakenly thought it was discussing something illegal. To clarify there is no tax free shopping for EU travel and all EU passengers are charged VAT on their purchases in the airport. There's absolutely nothing illegal about buying something and not flying to an EU destination.

Tomorrow I'm flying Buenos Aires to Madrid, I then have a flight Madrid-Dublin not connecting. Two of the passengers travelling with me are not EU citizens and need to have their passes stamped at the Ryanair desk apparently.

Do they need to clear customs to go to a check in desk?

No Desks airside as Ryanair don't do connecting flights, you need to go out and then back in again.

if they want to avoid passing customs with their bags, whatever they might be carrying, could you not hold on to their bags and stay airside when they go out and get the stamp off the ryanair desk ?

They most likely will have to go through Customs and Immigration. I would not advise holding on to their bags for them while they go out. Both Customs and Immigration could probably see if they had check in bags and it might cause red flags to be raised if you meet a strict official.

    This post has been deleted.

Customs monitor cameras within the Baggage area, they pull people for suspicious behavior.

Main thing they watch for is people entering the Terminal with a Cheap ticket to a Non-EU Destination, buying Duty Free and then exiting the Terminal again.

In this case though there's nothing illegal about it anyway, don't see why holding bags would be an issue inside the customs control, although I hope the OP knows his mates well and there aren't any bags of talcum powder in the luggage :D
