( Thanks a million for the post - I'm a sucker for a compliment :D) Nice Amp - early HDMI jobbie! but will you ever change your amp man - how are we expected to survive if we keep selling reliable stuff to people who look after it??

    Thanks Armchair - much appreciated,

I might look after it but the 4 and 1 year old do have some fair shots off dismantling the whole face of it, to no avail! Phew:-)

I'm sure people probably don't have time for this, but could anyone explain the basics of building such a system??

The amp quality is important I guess?  Most important?  Then the speakers?  Is the quality of a CD player noticeably different at the different price points?   Is the 'weakest link' of your system kind of obvious and holds everything else back?

Have always been interested in building a system but have never really fully understood the importance of various parts.  Have seen  houses with full bose speaker systems and cd players,  and  cheap looking amps, I'm guessing this is pointless?  Equally, if you have a fantastic amp and speakers, I guess this is all rendered a bit pointless by playing compressed digital music through the system?

Is it best to go middle of the road on all components (assuming that is what budget allows), or to splash most cash on an amp, or speaker, or whatever, and try and save then in other areas?

Sorry for all the basic questions. Grateful if anyone has any general information on this or could point me towards a good link or website where I can read up on it!

    Thanks a lot

    Hi wersal gummage,

That's actually quite a difficult question to answer without saying "they're all important." An amplifier is very important as it is tasked with getting your source to your speakers with as little distortion as possible. A good set of speakers is essential as a good frequency range means you won't be missing any of the music. Your source really depends on what you're using (vinyl, CD, mp3.) Basically a good audio system is to get as much of the information from your source through your speakers. The benefits of a separates system are that it allows you to change as you go. If you find your speakers or amp are lacking you can match to what you have.

You would be quite right to go for mid range for all to start and work from there. We do many package deals on mid range hi fi equipment on richersounds.com. If you have an idea of what sort of budget you have drop me a message and I can put something together for you.

    Many thanks

    David
