NAS additional drives

    A question for anyone that owns a stand alone NAS for home use.
    Alongside the bays for internal drives there are usb ports which I assume you can connect external drives to. If you have a RAID enclosure that appears to a machine as a single volume is there any reason it wouldn't be able to be attached to the NAS?

    Take this one as an example.

    Depends on the OS on the NAS. They usually run something like busybox.

    Normally you'd interface with such enclosures via SCSI/eSata/Sata.

    On qnap nas's the usb drives are seen as 'external' devices and appear as USBDisk001/002...etc.

    ^^ same for synology.
    you can leave them plugged in and they appear as removable drives.
    Is there any point though? WD Red hard drives are pretty big and cheap now.
    Well worth the investment. Whatever you do don't get so called Green drives for a NAS as linux based NASes are pretty heavy on reads every few seconds.
