"I'd never have guessed"... said no one ever.

PoM and Kilcoyne aren't with the squad currently, training with Munster this week.

As no one would have guessed you questioning anybody who dares suggest change. So boring at this stage.

Call up Matt Healy. Covers Wing, Fullback and Scrum Half :D

I was thinking about this recently. It would be great to have a genuinely versatile scrum half. Healy's probably as close as we have right now.

if we could have a 9/10 (greig laidlaw type) on the bench with a 10/centre (madigan/scannel type) and a back 3 player we'd have as much flexibility as you can get.

Really hope he goes SOB/VDF/JH this week if CJ is out. TOH to FB for me without a doubt, rather him than moving Zebo and bringing in Earls, who will probably be 23rd man.

    Matt Healy covers 9, 11, 14, 15
    Olding covers 10, 12, 13, 15
    Perfect for a 6:2 split

At least we should keep our other players working on their goal kicking to give us a little flexibility on our outhalf.

It's well known than Conor Murray was a very decent kicker at AIL level. But Luke McGrath and Gary Ringrose were both top class goal kickers through the ranks too. McGrath kicked Ireland to the European U18 title with a massive penalty from just inside the opposition half, I recall and was it Ringrose who didn't miss a single kick when Blackrock won the SCT?

At least if we had those options on the pitch, it would give us that little extra flexibility for guys like Carbery to come into the game if required.

Scannell is someone that we could really do with coming through and should get a start in Japan, hopefully. His game ticks so many boxes but he needs to be tested at a higher level.

Yep, it's not like a team might target an important player for special treatment, especially when they know there is no replacement. Oh wait, we're not playing NZ this week? Carry on...

Would anyone genuinely trust Healy at scrum half anymore? I know he kept Murray out of the U20 Irish team but when called on to play there in the Pro12 final, he looked like a winger playing scrum half.

    in theory...
imagine the holy show if we ended up with those two as our half backs in a tough game. throw in POM on the Wing and we could set some records

He slots in fine when needed to but no he isnt a genuine scrum half option now. My tongue was firmly in my cheek.

The way I see it, barring tiredness or injury, the team will be picked based on the following merit order:

    1. J McGrath, 17. C Healy,
    2. Best (capt.), 16. S Cronin, backup: Tracy,
    3. Furlong, 18. Bealham,
    4. D Ryan, 19. Henderson, backup: Dillane,
    5. Toner,
    6. Stander,
    7. O'Brien, 20. van der Flier, backup: Leavy,
    8. Heaslip (vice capt.),
    9. Murray, 21. Marmion, backup: L McGrath,
    10. Jackson, 22. Carbery, backup: R Scannell,
    11. Zebo, backup: Earls,
    12. Marshall, backup: Olding,
    13. Payne, 23. Ringrose,
    14. Trimble, Backup: Gilroy, Adeolokun,
    15. R Kearney, backup: O'Halloran.

Personally would prefer if the props rotated, Tracy got a chance to sub instead of Cronin, D Ryan dropped of of the 23 so Henderson to 4. and Dillane to bench, if Stander is not 100% I'd put O'Brien at 6. and start van der Flier at 7. and Leavy to bench, put L McGrath on the bench ahead of Marmion, Earls in for Zebo, and O'Halloran in for R Kearney.

What would be our most versatile bench?

Furlong : 1 and 3 (he did okay that one time)
    Bealham : 1 and 3
    Strauss : 2 and 7
    Dillane / Henderson / Kearney : 4,5,6
    POM : 6,8,11,14 :D
    Murphy : 6,7,8
    Healy : 9,11,14,15
    Olding : 10,12,13,15

Ireland have been pretty physical in their games against the All Blacks. Do people think Australia will get parody up front?

    Definitely.

Australia have been imitating a test level scrum for years.

As I posted after the game at the weekend - in the light of SA's results since, my view of the tour down there has been further reinforced of one we left behind us against a poor team.

We definitely showed up well against the ABs in the two games, if we keep largely the same side I'm curious to see how we get on against Oz. A win sees us in good stead and we're on a major upward curve. A loss is a bit of a reality check before the next barometer which is England in the Six Nations.

And yet I'd love to see some changes - I know these won't happen in the light of players sent back to Munster, injury concerns etc - but if I were picking the team I'd try a new FB (TOH or Zebo), we'll have an injury-enforced new centre pairing (which is no bad thing in the long run) but Ringrose has to get 80 in. Maybe give Heaslip, McGrath and one of Toner/Ryan (probably Ryan) the weekend off for Healy/Killer, Dillane/Henderson, Stander at 8 with some combination of JvdF/POM/SOB... not that anyone needs a rest but just purely to explore options.

I think if Ireland's forwards play as they did last weekend then we should dominate in scrums and at the breakdown. Their lineout is pretty solid.

Well it was said tongue in cheek as not gonna happen

Healy moved to SH in the away game against Cardiff last season and did alright - Murray doesn't really come off in games so can see argument for it only being "break glass in case of emergency", be a hell of a gamble to go 6:2, but can't think of any other non Scrum half player who does have experience at 9

    Apart from Denis Buckley :pac:

It's funny that this time last year POM's injury was a major issue, a key player out long term was a disaster and now he can't get back in the team even when fit and performing well. It's probably frustrating for him but it's a good position for us to be in.

It was Kidney. Mal was inexplicably dropped after the first two games of the 09 Six Nations. It was later alleged that he was late for a team bus and was axed for it.

Although he played 13 for Blackrock, he kicked for all their games. Before the final he had 16 from 17 off the tee from three games.

So he's the Joey Carbery designated kicker I suppose :)

I was thinking the same thing. His fitness is an issue but if we're just looking at this weekend alone he appears to be the 4th choice flanker at best. I think Leavy is retained in the squad ahead of him. Come the 6N everything could change obviously but the guys who are in there now are just playing so well.

I'm not surprised to see POM released, I don't think he's stood out physically in any of the games I've seen since his return even in the pro 12, certainly not to the extent you'd expect from an experienced international.

Personally I feel he's a little underpowered compared to other test back rows at the best of times though compensates for it with an excellent skill set. I think it'll take him a little longer to get back up to speed as a result.
