How to start playing Pokémon?

My daughter (7) wants to start playing Pokémon. None of her friends are currently playing it, but she wants to play.

I figure we could learn together.

So basically my query is what will we need to get started by way of cards and materials?

For the card game, places like gamestop, some Tescos, Smyths, Argos should have pre-made decks for sale that can give you a solid idea of the game. They come with rules, tokens, coins, and I think they have a mat for a player too.

For the video games, there's a new set out tomorrow, Sun and Moon, and they are pretty welcoming to new players.

That's a box with booster packs in them, so with that she wouldn't be able to play the game just yet, it wouldn't have enough cards to make a deck. It does come with a big fancy Pikachu card though. If she's only 7 this might be a good option too as it gives you everything to get started and teaches you how to play.

I had the B&W version of that trainer kit, its perfect. You get a 1st-game-in"a-can so you can learn the structure of play without buying 2 complete decks, afterwards she can combine the trial decks into one complete one. Although in my case my 7 year old took my 4 tins of cards and the starter deck is all I have left....

Yeah there's also an official iPad app if you have one. I believe that teaches you how to play too. Might be a good idea before investing in the cards to see if she's into it.
