just looking for ideas for a book for my mam.
she's in her mid 60's, doesn't read much at all apart from newspapers but the books I can recall her reading in the past are ones that remind her of her growing up, like

    don't wake me at doyles
    angelas ashes
    mc carthys bar

so basically she likes Irish non fiction.

any suggestions for other books? or maybe little known gems?

    thanks!

I'd say your best bet is browsing the Easons bookshop/website- there's great scope there!

There is a very interesting book, 'Haunted Ireland' by Tarquin Blake, about Ireland's most haunted places.

The same author also has books about abandoned churches and mansions.

From what you say Irish biographies interest her?
Has she read Bill Cullen's 'A Long way from selling Penny Apples' book, or 'Mama Tina', the biography of Christina Nobel or 'An Irish Country Childhood' by Marrie Walsh.

'Children of The Rising' is also an interesting read, telling the story of the young people caught up in the 1916 rising, which could be a good gift considering it's the centenary year.

If you have a look on http://www.easons.com/Books under the Irish category and Biography category, there's loads of choice and hopefully something she'll enjoy. :)

Not saying Tarquinn isnt great but if your mum isnt into Haunted Places that book isnt very good..

Alice Taylor has some lovely books out there.
Eddie Lenihan has great gems also. http://eddielenihan.weebly.com/store.html if you order early also he might sign copies for you.. Have to say I love his books, it is true life but very funny, if your mum likes a bit of a giggle the *devil is an irishman is quite good.

What kind of tale is your mum into then, would it be historic, childhood memoirs, murder etc.. Have lots of book readers in the family so can try to help.

In the meatime these two Irish Websites are great for online http://www.books.ie/ and Mercier Press https://www.mercierpress.ie/
