Ha! Is that him? His acting career never really took off then!

    Where does RTE get them?

Neither one's acting career worked out, tbh. Baz started out as an actor, his very first appearance, that I saw anyways, was on an RTE show about plastic surgery. Baz was on it getting his ears pinned back. They took cartilage out of both ears, cos he'd had the 'dumbo' effect going on. He mostly did theatre.
Thought we were rid of Baz, after all of his bad gigs, but then he snagged a job on Sky (thanks to his mammy-how Irish is that?) and made himself a commodity again.
I personally think of him as the gimp who went out drinking, on a night out, then tweeted all the alcohol he was having, drove drunk and crashed his 200 Grand car.

The other fella, tried his hand at presenting, both 'How Low can you Go' and a TV3 Animal Rescue show, alongside another TV3 presenter. He was fired after one series, she was kept on. (She was better, tbh. He came across as cold and uncaring).

No. Not having it. "Baz" was a Big Brother reject from the early days. Neither an actor nor a "comedian". A complete chancer that RTE saw as a star since he made aclown of himself on Channel 4.

He's a complete nobody, that got lucky. Zero talent whatsoever.

'Bez' was on Big Brother, Baz probably wanted to be. But yeah, it didn't happen. At least he's not that tosspot Ray Shah, the guy who became famous for masturbating on Big Brother.

I remember Baz trying his hand at comedy-he stole Adam Ferrara's material.

I can't imagine how irritating it is for anyone with legit talent to get into media-must be frustrating as **** to catch a break.

Oh yeah, that was Ray Shah. So Baz was a comedian first, failed. Actor, failed. Now he's a radio host. That's a pattern with Irish celebrities. They always end up on the radio as a last chance to stay in the spotlight.

    2018 radio hosts will include:

    Des Bishop
    Bressie
Some boyband embarrassment of a man.

I dunno, there were some really entertaining comics who would appear on the LLS-but they weren't Irish.
Our home talent was pretty poor around then-I'd argue it was the 80s/ early 90s before we started to see any talent or people . And that was down to Irish comedy clubs forming.
The 'cabaret' acts were grand, for their time-but they were outdated by the time the 80s and 90s were rolling around. (Dermot Morgan was probably one of the earlier standups, and even he still wasn't great).

It seriously cannot be understated how important Nighthawks was round the early late 80s-it had emerging Irish talent that wouldn't get a look-in anywhere else.
Many of whom went on to greater things. Marked a definite cultural shift in Ireland.

Jeezzzz-wow, that's...that's pretty damn savage. God. That explains why he never hung around RTE afterwards, even Damien McCaul was on 2fm for a time.
I wonder if similar happened to Kathryn McKiernan? I remember she was kinda chubby, and then lost a lot of weight about a year or two after joining RTE. (I just put it down to the hectic presenting schedule). Wonder if she was told her job was at stake if she didn't lose weight. I do know the DG of RTE at the time was a notorious prat-he got fired for sexually harassing a number of female staff. At the time, he had brought in a number of young 'wans, including Geri Maye, Fiona McShane, Pamela Flood, Nuala Carey etc and 'fired' Evelyn Cusack (she came back a month or so later, due to massive backlash, Joan Blackburn was also fired, she took a case against RTE). I'd imagine the the whole sexual harassment thing damaged many of these lady's careers, sadly. (Questions as to their actual 'talent').

Wasn't he exposed by the two guys behind Podge & Rodge/Zig & Zag? Think they secretly recorded him or something like that.

the old late late style "comedy" of the 80's can't really be held up as comedy, it reflects where the country was at the time. Same way we can't compare the 60's irish showbands to music.

ps I love putting "comedy" in "" ....

Sadly, comedy has only gotten worse or bad in a new way. From Maureen Potter to Mrs Brown, the SAME old Dublinese clichés are relied upon. MP may be dead and gone but her influence is still very much there in Mrs Brown and the like. Just more dirty.

With regard to the showbands, there were some good singers and musicians in there but a lot of poor fare. Needless to say, the scene today is much much worse and Irish music dominated by boybands and modern country singers is the worst ever. When you mix bad music and bad comedy a la Hit da diff and The farmer wants a wife, you are getting the worst of both worlds.

I have an awful feeling Des Bishop will be hosting the late late show. Keeps me awake at night.

I doubt it-he's not that popular, and his 'presence' in RTE is pretty poor, tbh. Ten years ago, I would have thought 'yeah, he's popular atm, he might get the gig'. Now, since his rather poor performance on Dancing with the Stars, I think RTE were paying attention. I doubt he'd even make the top 20 list of contenders for doing the LLS. (The lad who washes Tubridy's car is probably more popular now, tbh).
Wasn't he exposed by the two guys behind Podge & Rodge/Zig & Zag? Think they secretly recorded him or something like that.

Those two were in England at the time-Zig and Zag were on the Big Breakfast, if I remember correctly.
It was one of their brothers (Dustin's puppeteer) who led the sting.
Apparently the DG said enough to get himself fired, but not enough to out himself as a scumbag and harasser.

And they're all a decades long leap backwards-like a massive leap backwards, not just comedy, but music too. (Many of them tried their hand at the pop music/ dance music scene-they failed at that, so country is where they found a niche). Nathan Carter and the likes. There's some amazing talent out there...that you wouldn't know about because RTE don't promote em. Even Other Voices, while showcasing upcoming talent, doesn't get the same attention as the Late Late allows.

Very true. Failed pop singers become 'country' singers and give this originally blues focused genre a happy clappy makeover not remotely connected to the greats like Hank Williams. The Late Late has a lot to blame for all this.

Anyone who THINKS the Late Late only got bad and got into forcing certain mediocre performers as gods in Tubridy's or Kenny's era should note Maureen Potter. They should also note that Gaybo also launched Mrs Brown himself, Brendan O'Carroll. BOC was constantly on in the 1990s with Gaybo. The Late Late has been responsible for launching much of the poor comedy and music we have had here. From Maureen Potter to Mrs Brown, The Late Late's obsession with poor clichéd working class Dublin so-called 'comedy' sees no sign of ending.

Even the LLS band makes me cringe. Trying so hard to be the Tonight Show with Letterman and just coming off as amateur hour.

    Imagine thinking this was good.

As bad as it is he got one thing right.

Sex appeal. He had the brains to put a hot young woman in the video.
He'll go far, as most pop videos are soft porn these days.

Beats Nathan Carters swooning to 70 year old widows.

Yep, or chefs (Donal Skehan), or wedding singers (few of the lads from D-Side, also Derek Ryan).
I do remember that Peter Smith fella-tried to 'be many different types', as a singer. At one point, even marketing himself as 'might be/is gay' both in a boyband (Phixx) and a solo career. (The 'pretending to be gay' thing was started by Tatu-and was equivalent of gay blackface, really ticks me off in hindsight). It didn't work, nor did auditioning for 'The Voice', which he praised before going on the show, then insulted when he didn't get through. (He was in many groups, tbh, and none of them were a success). Now he's trying to be Phil Lynott.

I wouldn't blame the Late Late however. I sort of put a lot of the blame on things like American Idol and TG4.
TG4 have a reality show called 'Glor Tire', as well as Opry Dhuire and other shows that feature 'country' music heavily (GT's been going for 10+ years). Then RTE with their 'Stetsons and Stilettos' crap. There were claims 'oh, country music has a revival', and I doubt it. Unless they think 'band who sings at a wedding' equals 'storming the charts'.

Beats Nathan Carters swooning to 70 year old widows.

Ah, sure he ticked off the old ladies with his 'repeal the 8th' support. There goes his fanbase.

They were even worse when he used to have them on Tubridy Tonight, constant camera closeups of the frontman mugging and stupid unfunny "banter" between them and Tubs. At least on the LLS their onscreen time is more scaled back but I think most people would prefer to see the back of them.

I would have thought she'd be past the point of periods now-menopause and all that.

Unless she's trying to rip off Janeane Garofalo, but Janeane hasn't done that material in 20+ years.
