Laptop for Primary School

Some help if you please...

Our school is looking to buy 5 new laptops. Ive been tasked with the job of pricing them...Ive no idea!!

They will be used for internet and basic word, powerpoint, photostory etc.

Any help or guidance would be great.

Budget is up to €350 per laptop..

No we dont. But we are working on getting one at the minute

You can get bog standard laptops such as the one here

My own opinion is that they are false economy however. My OH is a teacher as well and she has brought home various budget laptops from schools that can barely manage basic tasks.

We have some basic ones and they are rubbishly slow.

Any view on this one for the same money?

That looks alright in fairness. The SSD is a bonus and I doubt you'd need anY more capacity than the 128GB.

We still have yet to make any purchases due to budget difficulties. Happily we are in a position to buy 6 laptops now.

Shouldn't you be sending out a tender using the guidelines / email on the PDST site?

Beware of the office 365 subscriptions with those laptops.
It used to be possible to get Office Pro for Schools at a one-off cost of 44 quid.
You'd want to contact the NCTE to ask for a list of academic sellers.
An Academic Open License without Software Assurance with the NCTE discount by providing your school number.

Using the Academic enterprise version of Windows 10 would be recommended instead of the windows 10 home version on those laptops, but probably outside your budget. You'd need someone to volunteer a fair bit of technical work to get the benefit from it.

I wasn't aware of such guidelines so thank you for bringing it to my attention.

I am looking for advice on which laptop to buy before making a purchase.

On the office front... check if the school is already enrolled for Office 365 as part of an academic volume license scheme. I used to work in the education sector myself and all our schools were licensed for Office, Windows etc under that programme

Also worth calling companies like DELL or big resellers of Lenovo/HP as you're likely to get a better deal than retail shop prices and probably better warranties and support.

That's the purpose of the framework. Send one email to the particular address with a description of what you want and get tenders from the lot.

I am not an expert but I presume that any purchase for the purposes of education would be VAT exempt? That needs to be taken into account when pricing as well.

Again another reason to use the approved framework I would presume
