Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Thats actually why most rescues keep dogs for at least 2 weeks before vaccinating, pointless vaccinating an ill dog. They keep the dogs for the 2 weeks, vaccinate, and rehome.

I didn't know this, so I picked up my dog on Saturday and vaccinated him on Wednesday, thinking I was doing the right thing. He was listless within two hours of the injection, but vet had said he might be sleepy and off his food, so I wasn't really alarmed until Friday, when the terrible diarrhoea started. From Saturday until Wednesday, he was bouncing fit and playful, he was surrendered from a litter at 12 weeks old so he was pretty healthy coming into the pound. I never found out what happened to his two brothers, also surrendered with him, as the record keeping wasn't great at the pound, but no-one else phoned them with reports of parvo at the time.

We got our happy ending, but next time, I would be watching and waiting and building a dog up for the vaccination, which I think could also be overwhelming to a sickly dog (just my opinion).

    ^^^^

I wrote my post above before reading DBB' s post, which was very enlightening. I don't know how my dog survived really, I'm just so grateful that he did as he's my best pal.

An interesting upshot of a puppy being sick and having a hospital stay at such a young age is that they actually get some really useful exposure to all sorts of handling and human contact and strangers at a very impressionable age... So pups that had Parvo and recovered in the vets, are often super-socialised and brilliant with people as adults :o

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭L1985

Good point DBB. I do know this rescue did get the vet to do it as the vet told me. However I got two kittens off them previously and both had cat flu so it unfortunately had made me wary now. The socialisation will be a good point-fingers crossed we get that far. And yes I think you sometimes have to look at the greater good however heartbreaking that might be.
I'll be calling the vets tomorrow morn and please to all the doggy gods up there That he has been eating on his own and we can bring him home to his new bed!!

Unfortunately it didn't do much good for my dog. She hates strangers now.

I've always wanted to know, if a dog has had parvo, are they immune or still vulnerable to different strains of it?

    Short term immunity I think

Good point. Tbf the Rescue is over run so I'm not going to judge them for it-hindsight is great but when your under pressure I suppose rules get bent. We wanted a specific type of dog as well and he looked v healthy and they had him so....I would prob be a bit more wary in future myself thou re vaccinations.

From the first time I saw this thread I had a fair idea where you might have picked up your pup, as there's a couple of places down south that have pretty bad reputations. I totally would hold it against the rescue. (I'd be using the word "rescue" lightly, given your experience), not only have they put your pups life in jeopardy, but every other dog and pup they might have. And parvo is a NIGHTMARE to eradicate, it lives in soil for months after the infection so while they may be able to clean a pen or a run that they may have had the pups in, if they let them out anywhere, they're in danger of not eradicating the disease. A litter of pups found in a ditch should be quarantined. This obviously didn't happen, it was "in and out" and god knows where they were kept and whether it was disinfected properly.

A decent, reputable rescue would not have behaved in this manner. They would follow protocol and veterinary instruction on quarantine and vacc procedures because they know the risks involved. The pain and suffering they have caused these pups because of lax procedures and greed for getting a rehoming fee in. The stress, worry and heartache they have caused You, and other owners of the other pups that they shipped out. It's absolutely horrendous. It makes me so bloody angry that rescues are allowed operate like this, and risk dogs health, and in turn give good rescues a bad name.

Sorry for the rant, and I'm delighted that Jaspar has hopefully turned a corner and is keeping some food in.

Ok so some great news!!! He is eating on his own and running around wagging his tail! They are going to weigh him today and all going well he should be left go home tomorrow!!!my Mam keeps laughing when I say stuff like that as it sounds like a person in hospital!! So delighted-can't believe how tough the little guy is either!!
Re borderlinemeath-you make some excellent points so yes the rescue do have some things they did wrong. I honestly can't blame them too much as I know how hard they work and they seem v genuine. They don't ask for an adoption fee either. I just know from working with animals myself that sometimes you take risks that U shouldn't take as you get overwhelmed. But it's not good enough and I know where ye are all coming from.

I have a pic from when we first got him but I don't know how to upload. Can you do it through an iPhone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,055 ✭✭✭Fakediamond

Aaah, that's brilliant!! What a little fighter! I second that on the pics, but I'm not great on the uploads, use the paper clip icon when composing a message and choose from photo library, that's all I know.

I have had a terrible past 36 hours, but this has made me feel so much happier knowing your little guy has made an improvement.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,055 ✭✭✭Fakediamond

He's lovely! what's he gonna be when he grows up? Big paws for a big dog?

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭L1985

I know he is ridiculously cute-how could you leave him behind??
No he's a terrier crossed with god knows what!! Has little paws and we want a smaller dog so should work for us. I just want him home tomorrow and I can relax!
Feel a bit bad for our old Labrador-my manic collie already does his head in and literally jumps on him while he is sleeping...my hope is they will annoy each other and leave the long suffering lab alone!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,277 ✭✭✭aonb

Now that we've seen photos (thanks DBB!) of the cutie, Im sure everyone on here is rooting for him even more. Everything crossed here that the little chap makes a full and speedy recovery, and will be tormenting your old lab with the nutty collie very soon - please keep us updated & very best of luck - he is really gorgeous

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭L1985

Really thanks guys for all of the support. It's really lovely and makes me feel a lot better!!!

    Omg he's beautiful

Don't tell my dogs i said that

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭L1985

ok its green light everyone-little Jasper is coming home!!! Collecting him this evening. they are giving me special food to give him and build him up with (now to stop the other two from robbing it and believe me the Labrador does not need building up!!) and just said to make sure he eats and drinks plenty and takes his antibiotics! cant wait to take him out of the vets-apparently they are very mean to him and attacked him with a hair dryer which he naturally attacked back!! cant wait to put him back in his little bed! Let the potty training commence!
and yes we think maybe a beagle or basset hound type mix!might know more as he grows older!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭L1985

So have my little pet back home-so happy to have him home. Poor guy is shockingly thin from his ordeal!
Now one thing the vet said he didn't have diarrhoea anymore but he just had some there with us. Now a he just drank a decent bit of milk-he decided the milk in my cup looked good so I'm thinking that wasn't the best for his stomach which may explain the diarrhoea. The vet gave us canned food for him but any suggestions on how to pamper him for the next week or so? I'm not at home until the weekend so just praying dad remembers to feed him regularly and keep the other 2from gobbling his food!!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,055 ✭✭✭Fakediamond

Milk doesn't agree with most dogs or cats and many humans!

I'd just follow the vets advice and feed him little and often. Too much food in one go will probably just make him feel ill, bit like humans really!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭L1985

Yeah thought of that after!!!was happy to see him drinking it as I was thinking it would build him up-it was after it clicked with me that it wouldn't have been good for his stomach!!! He is on electrolytes as well so will be getting them to drink.

  • Moderators, Recreation & Hobbies Moderators Posts: 9,775 Mod ✭✭✭✭DBB

Definitely no more milk op :o I know it was an accident, but milk won't be easily digested by a pup his age.
I'd echo the above... stick with what the vet gave you, little and often for a week or two, and then start getting a bit of variety, protein etc into him. He's convalescing now so needs the doggy equivalent of Complan for a while until his system is ready to take on the world again :) Get yourself some doggy prebiotic and probiotic tablets or paste from Amazon for him to start in a week or so (the convalescent food probably contains some anyway).
Big meals can cause diarrhoea, as can milk, but so can the excitement of coming home!
Delighted for you and him, it's been quite the journey :)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,055 ✭✭✭Fakediamond

It's funny, but I have no recollection of how I fed my little fella after his ordeal, I just know he never looked back. He eats dry food now and whatever the cat leaves from her pouch food!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭L1985

Perfect-the vet said he didn't really care what he ate as long as he ate but gave us those special tins to help him along. Breaks my heart to see how thin he got thou-he was such a plump little pup-luckily for him he was!! He was a bit more lively putting him to bed there the tail was going and he was pottering around so hopefully he gets his feet fairly soon. Poor guy doesn't even know this is home like!he's been in the vets longer!!!

I do remember that, I hadn't even time to bond with him when he was gone for four days. He'll settle in pretty fast now, home is SO much better than the vets!

Wishing him a happy life, with lots of treats, plays and walks!

  • Registered Users Posts: 1,018 ✭✭✭L1985

We live on a farm and TBH it's dog paradise as we have a wood and a river and they are outside most of the day and inside at the fire in the evening so plenty of walks and exercise. We are v lucky in that we don't have to lock them up at all as someone is here the whole time. And there are plenty of rabbits to almost catch!!! Just need to get this little guy to the stage where he can chase a rabbit and I'll be happy :)

I think I'm glad I missed this thread until now:-/ It was such a read! My nerves were shot half way through but thankfully there was a happy ending. Well done Jasper! :)

Get some Slippery Elm convalescent food in Holland and Barret. Mx up to a creamy consistency and he'll lick it up even out of your hand. It's excellent for sick dogs.

I remember giving my rescue milk when i got her.....my poor kitchen floor :(

Great to see the little fella is doing well!

We were in a similar situation during the week. Collected puppy from rescue on Saturday. By Sunday she was in the vet. Vommitting and runny poo. Vet said she was severely dehydrated.

Unfortunately she didn't pull through and was put to sleep this morning . Vet asked could he do a post mortem . Turns out she had liver issues and didn't have a chance.

It's strange we didn't have her for more than 24 hours but we are really reluctant to get a replacement .. anyone else been in this situation

Sorry to hear that Kev (but delighted to hear Jasper's doing well).

I can completely understand the feeling of not wanting another pup - even though she wasn't there long, it's the emotional investment you already had in her, like a little person in a way. Obviously you can't just get another random pup to fit that very special shaped little hole that she left, you have to be ready to get a different pup, that will be its own self, if you know what I mean. Give it a lhittle while if necessary, maybe it won't even need to be long, but it's understanhdable I think.

Reem Alsalem UNSR Violence Against Women and Girls: "Very concerned about statements by the IOC at Paris2024 (M)ultiple international treaties and national constitutions specifically refer to women & their fundamental rights, so the world (understands) what women -and men- are. (H)ow can one assess fairness and justice if we do not know who we are being fair and just to?"

Aw kev so sorry to hear that-that's devastating.tbh if something goes wrong with jasper id be similar you get so emotionally invested!! Maybe if you try think from the potential pups point of view? You can give it a good home and check out that it's from a reputable breeder etc?

If this is the same rescue, they really need to be reported at this stage. It gives every rescue a bad name when they do things like this, and it puts people off rescuing

Hope you don't mind me asking, but do you know how long they had the pup before being rehomed? There's a few places seem to just take animals in and ship them out again just as quickly, which may look good for their numbers, but ultimately leads to problems like this.

I would definitely take some time before getting another, it's amazing how quickly you bond with them :( they really do become family members.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 279 ✭✭kev_Makaveli

I honestly don't know how long they had the pup for. They still have her sisters there. It was my sister who went about getting the pup. We had a retriever for about 15 years and passed away due to old age etc.

Took parents and sister ages to decide to get another dog and they had this experience .

We're not allowed to name rescues on here, but there is a good chance most of us will know which rescue you dealt with. Please report them to the Dept of Agriculture.

Ok so debated about posting this so soon but jasper is back at the vets. He was ok today wasn't great and I rang the vets this morn and they said to see how he went. Around 7 this evening he went downhill scarily fast. He is back in there but I don't know how much hope me or the vets hold out for him....heart is absolutely broken. I thought I'd lost him in the drive over that's how bad he was....

Felt like an idiot but honestly thought he died on the way over he was so limp and unresponsive. It will be beyond a miracle if he makes it until tomorrow morn. Can't believe he went down hill so fast. Just praying for him-nothing more I can do....
