I just got the Special Edition from Argos (€54).
It's got codes for the weapon Masamune & some Travel Pack & recolour for the mechanics car.

This video is a good overview of what the combat system is capable of in the hands of a good player, especially in the mobhunt at the end. There's an IGN video of the same fight (which, unfortunately, I cannot locate) and they make it look absolutely woeful, but what else would you expect from IGN :p

bought the special edition in Argos for 53.99. Not going to be playing this till Christmas week. The ps4 version is meant to have frame pacing issues which can make the game look jittery. Hopefully will be patched before Christmas.

Picked it up yesterday for 57.99 in Smyths. I wanted the patch installed before I started the game so I watched Kingsglaive and the anime series called Brotherhood in the meantime.

I strongly recommend watching both before starting the game. They both give much needed context to the storyline and backstory to the main characters. Call it a failing on the part of the game's opening but it does feels very abrupt and kinda throws you into events headfirst.

Other than that minor niggle though I have to say I am really enjoying the game. The battle system is fun, the graphics are spectacular, the world is alive and vibrant and I love the freedom that this game allows the player compared to the FF13 games.

So Kinsglaive and Brotherhood take place directly before the game? Hadn't any intention of watching either of them, but might do it now.

Stopped playing after chapter one and went and watched Kingsglaive, it's in no way necessary I'd say but I definitely feel the story sits better with me now in terms of whats going on and my understanding of the world, and Kingsglaive itself was pretty decent.

Now I can't shake the feeling the game would have been better had it been set around the characters in Kingsglaive rather than the prince and his pals. We'll see I guess.

Yes both of them take place prior to the opening of FF15. Kingsglaive takes place a few days beforehand and Brotherhood literally at the start of Noctis's journey. Both will take no longer than 3 hours to watch and it makes the transition to the game that bit smoother. It's time well spent in my opinion.

Kingsglaive takes place at the end of chapter one of the game, brotherhood you could watch beforehand but I'd say it's better to watch at the end of chapter 1 of the game aswell. I watched both before the game and I kinda wish I had watched Kingsglaive at the end of chapter one of the game and not before it!

Okay sorry I was a little off in the timeline for Kingsglaive. But I don't personally think it makes that much of a difference if you wait til the end of Chapter 1 to watch them. Both Kingsglaive and Brotherhood were released before the main game so most people are gonna assume they are meant to be watched before starting the main game. There's really no right or wrong answer to this but I get why you say you wish you had watched Kingsglaive after chapter 1.

I watched Brotherhood there, and it was actually good. Gonna start the game now though.

How long are those in total might check them out later, Kingsglaive was around 1:45 I think it was.

Oh good god magic is sh1t in this , most of the time you end up doing more harm than good. Who thought it was a good idea to make it so it does friendly damage too

EDIT: Just to qualify this a bit more, and maybe it changes later, but if you want to use magic in this it's essentially like having to craft grenades , I'm not massive fan of turn based stuff but in a FF game I liked the formula of having party members who specialised in it and swapping different ones in for different areas and jobs. I'm enjoying the game over all but missing the depth from characters, party , and even gear.

There's 5 episodes, each about 10-15 minutes long. You can watch them for free in Japanese with English subtitles on Crunchyroll or Final Fantasy XV's official YouTube channel.

so any final fantasy heads opinions on this? wanted so much to like 12 and 13 but i just couldnt. Is this anywhere near as good as the older games?

I'm still on Chapter 1 and slowly getting used to the combat mechanics. They are definitely not intuitive. Dragon Age was better that this but I'm getting my head (and my fingers) into the new way of playing.
Using control scheme B as I read on NegGAF it's better.

I'm also glad I watched Kingsglaive and especially Brotherhood as you are really thrown into the game with not much to go on.

You might do me a favor and send me the link to that please
I will be starting the game tomorrow once I finish Sunset Overdrive

This and the 7 remake are literally the only reason I'd be willing to buy a PS4. Just can't justify that for two games.

Really wish they'd release PC versions.

Also, I'm playing this on the PS4 Pro with the super-sampled setting and it looks amazing. I'm not noticing the frame pacing issues.

Pretty sure it's coming but not for another year at the very least.

Is the super sample setting the 'high' setting in the options?

Played it for around 2 hours last night, and it's good. The gameplay doesn't feel at all Final Fantasy, but i suspect i'll enjoy it more once i get the hang of it. Glad i watched the Brotherhood shorts before starting it, as it gives some much needed (imo) background to the character.

Got another couple of hours with this last night and, yeah, I'm really digging it. Starting to get the hang of the combat and am a little less skeptical about it now. It's a huge departure from previous entries in the series, I'm not thrilled about how magic is handled, and it's perhaps a little chaotic, but it's engaging and fun and I look forward to battles. A huge change from the disaster that was combat in FFXIII.

It's less-po faced than recent FF titles, the characters are less moody and much more likeable as a result. Voice acting is excellent and the world is beautifully presented. It's actually interesting to explore because it feels more alive than FF worlds often do and there are plenty of little touches in there for you to stop and appreciate.

I'm probably about 4 hours in and I still haven't left the starting area, I'm having enough fun just exploring the region, finding treasure, battling, doing hunts and picking up side quests that I don't want to move on yet. So I still can't comment at all on the actual plot. :pac: I don't mind that they dump you in without telling you much though. I like it in fact. Why front load with exposition? I expect / hope that it will unfold organically and begin to make sense without me needing to sit through a primer first.

Coming up to the end of chapter one now and I'm still really enjoying it. I've accepted the idea of letting the car drive from location to location and it's actually a nice concept for adding little snippets of information to the overall plot. Got to try fishing as well last night which reminds me a lot of the fishing from Legend of Zelda:Ocrina of Time.

Definitely found money to be an issue, it's very easy to quickly run out and grinding for it is certainly more time consuming here (no more running around in circles for random battles). My only issue, and it's mine, not the games, is I hate leaving side quests on the map, I feel like I need to see everything so it takes me forever to get past an area.

Hadn't seen the alternate combat setup, must take a look at it later. I'm starting to get used to the combat now but it's still tricky to get above the A+ rank in any of the categories after a battle.

Don't rely on the car too much, Gladiolus survival skill depends on you running around, the higher it gets the better for you in terms of potion drops etc. which will save you Gil.

First real frustration in this game encountered. You have to fight a boss (not story related or spoilery but just in case and referrers to early in the second area)
the key to making this fight work is using magic to explode some oil barrels, you can't lock or target the barrels so you are casting and hoping usually it will damage the party as they are stood around him hacking away and doing tickle damage, you can run out very quickly and have hit nothing with no way to replenish fire

F'n magic in this game

At least I'm high enough a level to wear it down with standard attacks if I've enough potions on me. Or if Igi stops regrouping us right under the boss

This is going to be an xmas pressie for me. I am getting it on the strength of the positive reviews. Having been spoilt by The Witcher 3 (easily a top3 game for me now) story, are you as immersed in FFXV? Is it too much to expect The Witchers story as a benchmark here?
