‘Ocean of alcohol’ pouring into Irish homes since Covid-19 pandemic

They're disappointed that alcohol consumption has gone down???
Of course they are disappointed in the reduction of alcohol consumption during 2020 because it has exposed their repeated bare faced lies in their campaign on "cheap alcohol" from supermarkets is exclusively fuelling alcohol consumption and a public health crisis.

Their desired ideals of expensive alcohol availability in pubs/restaurants has been dramatically curtailed in 2020 so the dreaded only alternative for the public of "cheap alcohol" from supermarkets statistically has turned out pretty well for the public's health by their original metric

A friend tells me once Level 5 is over, he plans to buy any spirits/wine/beer in NI (which he visits anyways a few times a year).

This is a specific response to the regulations introduced in Jan 2021.

Good to see the new rules have done nothing to pricing really - picked up 24 cans of the black stuff in Lidl for €20 :)

Just worth pointing out that the new rules so far don't include Minimum Unit Pricing (MUP).

The drinks trade are still competing with each other so for now we consumers can still benefit.

MUP will introduce a base price below which no retailer will be allowed to go.

That's when we will be snookered.

    'Alcohol Action Ireland' lol

The last thing a parasitical entity such as a NGO like 'Alcohol Action Ireland' wants is any sort of change happening within the area they are whinging and moaning about because that means the gravy NGO money train is over for them.

Love that a 6% reduction in consumption is called marginal

If consumption increase 6% I don't think Eunan McKinney would be calling that marginal

Please sir, where is this ocean of cheap alcohol.
I have looked high and low and not found it.

I disagree, the "drinking problems" are myths from the government.
A lot of denial in Ireland as to the country's alcohol problems.

Happy to see the fall and hopefully it's part of a cultural change.

The savings are phenomenal. If you get a decent stock up, the difference pays for the fuel and gives you change back.

Just a quick comparison there, the same wine that costs 9.99 here in Lidl costs you 6.99 in the North. Thats a 3 euro saving on just one bottle of wine.

So just noting on the booze bargain alerts thread, LIDL have a bit of a loophole for the new legislation on offers having to run for 4 days.
If the product wasn't available for sale on the day before, the rule doesn't apply.
So LIDL are bringing out stock like slabs that they don't normally stock, and then selling it out in 1 day.

Duh. Alcohol consumption has been falling steadily here for about 20 years.

Fingal County Council are certainly not competent to be making decisions about the most important piece of infrastructure on the island. They need to stick to badly designed cycle lanes and deciding on whether Mrs Murphy can have her kitchen extension.

no no go away with the facts the zealots will have nothing to crib about constantly since this thread was open.

If its not sticking their nose in peoples lifes like this its sticking them in womens private parts to tell them how to run their bodies.

Theyre like a classic whos who of busy bodies.

Pointing out Ireland has serious alcohol issues make you a zealot? ha

Some people have serious problems sure. Its a fact that we are mid table for consumption, its been dropping for decades, and minimum procing doesn't work.

    It should be.

wishing and hoping will not make it so. Neither will MUP.

An ocean of alcohol - Alcohol Action Ireland
But consumption is down 6% on the previous year - Alcohol Action Ireland
As I've said before one of the greatest things about this thread is the hyperbole.

People claiming they'll never enter a pub again out of protest.
    People calling MUP probation.
People saying they will never vote for so and so again.

But it seems like AAI are getting in on the fun with this "Oceans of alcohol" stuff.
    Seriously like.

If the three above, the third one is realistic

If the economy contracted by 6% we would be in massive recession.

    Why not?

You are completely wrong. Here are three articles chiding the Government for vaccinating too slowly, 1, 2 and 3. They are also pro mask, sure they were promoting masks in March 2020 when the Gov was not just advising against masks but even advising doctors not to wear them. They also have been covering minimum unit pricing and vaping very fairly and I urge you to shed your bias against them.

I doubt anybody in this thread gives a single toss about that.

    Best mention it over there

People can no longer binge drink all night in crowded pubs.
They are forced to buy cheaper supermarket alcohol instead.

And consumption has dropped by 6%.

The cultural change started happening in the mid noughties when our consumption began dropping and has continued to do so year over year since then. Its just many people like yourself who don't think people should be allowed enjoy themselves in the freedom of their own homes have an agenda they have based their careers on that still needs to be pushed.

Of course it doesn't. Pushing to change it through coercive social engineering, on the other hand, absolutely does.
