Car insurance after disqualification

I was disqualified from driving in 2013 for 2 years after driving a motorbike with no insurance. I am looking to get back driving again in the next year or so and wondering what is the best way to go about it, get my own policy or be a named driver? Which companies are best for previously disqualified drivers? I am a 29 year old male. Thanks

I don't know any company you should specifically ring, but try all the places in the "List of insurers"

I do not work in insurance.

Just a reminder that if you receive a formal declinature from an insurer to whom you propose for insurance that refusal becomes a material fact that you must declare to the subsequent insurers whom you approach for a quote.

Therefore, I wonder if informal telephone enquiries of insurers as to whether or not they will quote you - for your circumstances - might be the best initial approach to the problem. This way you do not have formal declinatures to give you a quote / cover as you are really "window shopping".

Alternatively, is there any specialist broker out there who has a particular service in this area as I have little doubt that a quotation is probably going to be difficult to obtain and expensive.

It will be difficult but not impossible. In Ireland we have what's called the declined case agreement - this is essentially a mechanism whereby the market cannot decline to quote for compulsory motor insurance (unless it contrary to public interest). Have a look about half way down on the above link for details. Drop them an email and they will advise you what steps to take.

How it will work in practice: they might suggest giving your most recent insurer a ring first (were you insured on a motor policy when you got the bike conviction?). Then you'll need to ring around for at least 3 more quotes and take note of the company name, date, who you were talking to etc. At this point it is usually the first insurer you rang who will be obliged by the committee to offer a quote.

If you decide to try and get named on someone else's policy then you will still have to disclose the conviction. Not sure how, if at all, the declined cases agreement would apply in this scenario.

In any event - get in touch with them before you go any further
