I don't know if you are following the stratosphere thread over on Netweather, but one of the posters over there was discussing this very possibility.

There goes my predictions for 2017 out the door! I was predicting a warm March given that March 2015 & 2016 were both rather cold. I want a March like 2011 to say the least, maximum temperatures well above average, minimum temperatures below average with little rainfall and plenty of sunshine. We are overdue a warm March like come on Mother Nature! No signs towards a warm one however :(. I never want a March like 2013 again.

Can anyone remind me what March 2013 was like? Think I recall flurries & lying snow driving from East-West at some stage that month.

March 2013 started off actually rather Spring like with mild to borderline average temperatures. There were some sunny days but cloud affected many parts from the 3rd-5th bringing gloom so the temperatures went down. But on the 6th, rain pushed up from the south along with southwesterly winds which brought milder air (though it did not feel like it at all) of temperatures in the low to mid teens, though some parts did not get that high (My station Grange for instance didn't record 10c or more all month of March 2013. My max was only 9.1c). This continued up until the 9th with plenty of bands of rain pushing up from the south bringing very miserable days.

The band of rain on the 9th lingered for a time across parts but then went southwards and fizzled out as the easterlies then pounded in across us. It felt bitter in those easterlies. The 10th, 11th, 12th and 13th were all very cold days but rather sunny. Compare this:

Look at the maximum temperatures to the east of England on the exact same day of March between 2012 and 2013

    11 March 2012: 19c
    11 March 2013: -1c

    What a contrast!

Many places recorded wintry showers on the 10th/11th whilst parts of the Channel Islands recorded blizzards!

It continued cold all month long from then on virtually with temperatures never rising that much. It was the coldest Easter on record on March 31, 2013.

    .

Ah yes that blizzard. I remember looking ruefully in that direction from South London back then. What 50 miles might have done for us if it had tracked that way. I also spent time in Norfolk during the middle of March 2013, it was bone chilling with the sea breeze. That month was just ridiculous- there was even snow on the ground at night where i lived. It's rare enough to get that during the winter months in London.

Concise reminder, thanks! Here's hoping for a "better" March this year!

I have to drive from Galway to Clifden tomorrow morning at 8am.
Is there likely to be ice on the roads? Where would be a good site to get road conditions at that time?

You could always try the tit traffic site https://www.tiitraffic.ie/weather/

Has some very useful live road conditions information.

Nearly midnight, and only 2 of those stations are sub zero barely , while Under a supposed polar airmass, most well above zero
Proof positive the Atlantic doesn't do cold very well

Not to mention the small matter of arguably the most severe blizzard to hit our island in a generation!

    http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-northern-ireland-26689384

Fairly sure it was also the coldest March on record for much of the country though for some reason the monthly reports don't seem to be available on met.ie anymore

It was the coldest March on record for Ireland and the 3rd coldest on record for the UK.

    So meanwhile here in Poland.......

Yesterday was the warmest day since well before Christmas, -1, with a slight thaw in the beautiful winter sunshine.

Thursday night though provided us with extreme winds and snow causing 1m snow drifts, extending a km towards the village. We decided yesterday not to clear the snow as the wind was just blowing snow back.

It's snowing hard currently this morning and now getting colder again.

This coming week looks like being very cold once again.

Life is extremely hard in these conditions, I end up leaving my car parked 1km away so if we need it in emergency it's away from the snow blocked mountain track.

A lot of frost in Waterford City this morning. Temperatures must be on the rise as it appears to be thawing already 06.50am

Always felt Meteorology should be included in Physics for the Leaving Cert and Science for the Junior Cert. It wasn't when i did my Leaving in 1993, has that changed?

Imagine for your Junior Cert being asked 'On the following blank map of Europe and North East America draw synoptics (air pressure etc at 500hpa) which would lead to severe cold and possible snowfall'.

    :D

That last 1987 screenshot shows us exactly what is wrong with the high pressure next week. Needs to be further north.

It should have a question like that tbh. If Geography was filled with weather questions, I'd get an A+ :P.

From what I heard, Physics doesn't have much meteorology but is a requirement for meteorology courses. I'll be doing it for my LC anyway.

    You'd definitely fly it:D

I was the last year to do the old Inter Cert in 1991 and there was a one line answer in Geography to describe Ireland's climate.

'Mild, moist and changeable'!! I kid you not:)

P.s. Don't want to be asking you too many personal questions sryan but do you intend studying Science and specialising in Meteorology?

It's your love anyway and it's always good to study what your interested in regardless of other variables.

Is this a snow lovers appreciation thread or a general winter weather discussion thread?

I find the obsession with snow in Ireland bordering on the ridiculous.

And I find this immediate almost offended style posting we get from some users when the word snow comes up ridiculous :)

See! We all have opinions ;)

We do thankfully. Yours as stated here doesn't really have a tremendous amount of relevance to the point at hand though. :) If someone was to wander in here looking for a bit of winter weather discussion and trying to avoid snow threads see, then stating an opinion like "wtf are you all still talking about snow for" would be relevant at that time. Wandering on to a 150 page thread about snow and stating that opinion might not in fairness. ;-)

If it's snow you want, try clearing this lot.

    We've given up.
