You are so correct. I thought exactly the same thing myself.
It was hypocrisy of the highest order.
They were waffling on about how great she was and even played relatively new material which I wasn’t even aware of. Why didn’t they play it when she was alive. It really did annoy me the way the likes of Dermot Whelan and Muireann OConnell-both from Limerick eulogised her but couldn’t be bothered to play a track of hers when she was alive.
Do you not realize they no longer choice 99% of the music on their shows? It’s all formatted through RCS or something similar with an free slot for a feature or mix but they don’t choose the music. Back at the peak of Today Fm when they did the music on Ray Darcy’s show was excellent, he may have been a cranky git but him and the team used play great music. Like wide Foley Jp and Adele, Fenton’s show also was great

When D'arcy was at his best imo was when he used to spend the 3 hours every day practically creased over laughing all the time with the crew.

Ya but the music choices were brilliant, Rappers Delight and other disco songs on regularly, Also gems like Fiest - Inside and Out

Used really really enjoy the music even if it was only 7/8 songs per hour

My favourite shows have always been the ones with good music and from a series of genres. The presenters I could take or leave for the most part but, for me, good music underpins the best shows. That could be todays music or music from 40 years ago as long as the song is good.

When I started listening nearly 20 years ago, there was a good selection from different genres.

Now it just sounds like the same song all day every day. A lot of that is probably age related, admittedly, but I'm struggling to think of one of the favoured song currently played on Today FM that will still get airplay in 10 years time, never mind 20 or 30 years time:(

Fenton really had his own choice of music. A lot of soul that no other Dj would get to play or dare play. I doubt you would hear any of those songs now.

Or has music just gone to sh1te?

Tony was a legend. So unique, he’d stick out like s sore thumb on the bland line up on daytime Today fm now. Sadly we’re unlikely to see (hear) someone like him on Today FM again. Although I suspect Ferg “thinks” he’s in the same league....

Yes Tony had his own choice of music and he was no doubt one of the greatest DJ's Ireland ever produced, though the songs he did repeatedly play during his Today FM years were some how bland and what you would call "classics" ...those that end up on 'Greatest hits of the last 50 years' CD's...nothing exciting.
I know Tony's music interest and encyclopediacal knowledge went way beyond this and I always felt he played better music when he was filling in for someone on 2FM (while the Hotline was his main show playing the hits of the day).
Shame we never got to see this side of Tony more, even ending up on Late Date Radio 1 or something.

I remember getting a call for a quiz with Tony a few years ago.

I'm not one for nerves really - at least, they don't usually impact my ability to think and talk straight - I am a barrister so thinking and talking on my feet literally pays my bills.

But when I got on to Tony, I was so star-struck that I failed to answer a single question correctly. In fact, I think I only answered one question and passed on the rest. The question was "in what county is Midleton" and I think I said "Shropshire" or some shíte like that. :D

I suppose having the man in such high regard just meant I was completely bamboozled to be actually on the phone to him.

It was a strange experience and not one I want to re-live but at the same time, I got to speak to the Dude.

I was actually listening back to the "tribute" show I did the day after Tony died on my college station yesterday (by "tribute" here, I mean I gushed for an hour about how awesome Tony was, interspersed with songs I associated with him, riveting stuff).

At the time, I described Tony as being a relic of the golden age of radio. A true "DJ". And I stand by that. He was bloody perfect for that mid-afternoon slot. Just play some good tunes and don't waffle on too much. I don't normally subscribe to the "Oh, I wish DJs would just say what they'd played, and what was coming up and then shut up." stuff that a few posters on the forum seem to want. But Tony was the perfect embodiment of that style of presenting, and he didn't make it feel dull like a lot of presenters who do that style now do.

I wonder would they have axed Tony at some stage though? He was very old-skool and very different to what they seem to want now?

I doubt it, Tony would be hanging in there and possibly moved to weekends. When Tony passed that was Today FM's first cue to change the direction of station.

I miss Dermot and Dave. This fella should be on local radio at 3am

give local radio at 3am more credit !! He seems more appropriate for a torture chamber

It's Joe Donnelly and I actually like him.

It's funny, the feedback on Joe Donnelly is always mixed. I personally prefer him to D&D and I like them. I think he's one of the best on the air and I'd have him up there with Ed Smith, Kelly-Anne Byrne and the excellent Paul McLoone.

Some people find his dulcet midlands tones a bit hypnagogic but he's got a sharp wit and I think he's interesting.

    His mate's pub sounds unreal.

Yeah. He was a huge hit on txfm, the listeners really liked his wit and sarcasm. He does a great job on today fm but maybe the more mainstream audience on here just doesn’t get him

Today FM's a schizophrenic sort of station. Weekdays have the DJs who are bouncing off the walls, reading Twitter incessantly and playing the same 12 tunes over and over again. It only becomes interesting to people of my age group in the off-peak hours or at weekends. I wonder how many of the people who listen on weekdays tune into the programs we like?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,535 ✭✭✭johnire

I think he’s absolutely brilliant. He’s a breath of fresh air not having to listen to inane chatter about absolute nonsense. Only problem is he finishes at 12 and then you have one hyper presenter after another.

surprised they haven't replaced Cawley at the weekend with some twitter-hyper type 'presenter'

Eds' Songs of Praise show on now is just class radio.

If they built a station around this show, I'd be tuning all my radios into it.

No chance of that happening though:(

Absolutely, it's a great show. Pity it wasn't on more often.

Did anyone hear the replacement for Neil Delamere's show... Sunday Brunch (expect channel 4 will have something to say about that) with Susan Keogh.
Didn't hear much but it sounded to be very much the same show as before just different presenter
