They're a very neat looking car in the flesh.

Front on looks remarkably like the current generation mazda 6

My thoughts as well on first look at pics

Took a 1.6 SRI for test drive at the open weekend. Was rather impressed with how it drove, little bit of turbo lag below 2000rpm but nothing a change in driving style won't deal with. Dealer has or already a has a 2.0 170 demo coming in which I'll take for a spin. For those who love a nice low down driving position, I was surprised how low you can sit if you wish to.

Re: Zafira, I share the same view, I drove a few for a couple of weekends and was impressed with how well it handled. Not a racing car, but for what it is, it handles well, very composed. I had the 2.0 170 Zafira and it actually achieved better economy than the 1.6 136 and that was similar driving/similar roads. The 2.0 in the Zafira is rare but beautiful to drive if the budget stretches. As you rightly say the 1.6 is still good in the Zafira. I dunno how the Insignia 2.0 will fare but from my experience, fuel economy in the Zafira 2.0 is no issue.

Yea I'd be tempted to go to the 2ltr alright for the extra power in the Zafira extra €800 though which pushes up cost to trade up a year a nice bit. Probably could have swung it on my original deal but they had no 2ltrs in stock and had to go with one on the books to get my extra discount last year. 1.6 really isn't bad though you'd think with the extra weight it would struggle but it very close to your average 1.6 VW golf in performance. Extra power would be nice for overtaking though. Changing for another zafira probably doesn't make sense.

Still keep coming back to the new Insignia It looks great,is cheaper and much better specced. Drives way better and much nicer place to sit in. And I can get back to a petrol. Only question if we can live with losing the 2 extra seats. Trying to get the family with me to dealer to try out with car seats and an adult in the back. Hard to get time though going to have to borrow car over night and bring it to them. If it's ok for a adult I may be able to swing it. Wife is loath to lose them it is handy sometimes. Neither my mother or sister inlaw drive so regularly have one with us and occasionally both. Been handy for kids friends being able to bring a group. On downside I've been volunteered as a taxi service after nights out a few times!

Saw one on the road recently, silver, not the top spec version... looked nice but no where near as imposing as in the press pictures

Also those fake exhaust tips are a real turn off for me...

At the end of the day its still an opel and I'd never buy a new opel. I work for a company that bought alot of opel vans, like combo's and movano's and insignias they have been nothing but trouble. I'd have no confidence in Opels at all. The 30,000 km service interval is codology and thats the words of an opel dealer mechanic. These engines need the oil to be changed every 20,000 km's to keep the timing chain tensioner working right. If you do big mileage avoid an opel

So Fiats, BMWs, Mercedes, Renault, Dacia, Opel, Ford, Alfa, Audi, Volvo. Probably more, is there any marque obtainable to us regular folk that won't be shot down by someone who knows a mechanic/someone with a barstool?

My mechanic has nothing bad to say about any of the Koenigseggs.

Unfortunately I think that's part and parcel when you drive any sort of car, people who don't drive take advantage! lol Yea its hard one to call, maybe even wait a few years til the kids get older. But I know how you feel, the new insignia is a pull on the heart strings! Yea as you say, the 1.6 drives well considering the size and weight of the car and I was averaging easily 5.7/5.8l (50mpg) Yea re the 800e, its fine if your gonna keep the Zafira for the long haul but I doubt there would be any residual value benefit in having a 2.0 versus a 1.6. Perhaps look at the new Insignia estate, might be a compromise for the wife if ya have a bigger boot! lol

Well in my case ive a 3 year old opel combo 1.3 turbo diesel company van serviced on the every 30,000km. It broke its timing chain at 149,000km and needed an engine rebuild.. Broke down before with egr valve problems too... i wish id known to change the oil more regularly in it than what the manufacturer recommended. Its the life blood of an engine

The oil needs to be kept right as its oil pressure that keeps the tension on the timing chain.
