    1) Recover from injury.
    2) Get back running.
    3) Take it from there.

No pbs but have got myself into a position to have a crack in 2018. Happy overall how the year panned out considering where I was this time last year.

    1) Stay injury free - Went over my ankle in Sept, while coaching the kids! One thing led to another, now stuck with a persistent plantar fasciitis
    2) 5k 18:xx (PB 19:11) - Lack of speedwork so happy enough with 19:33 on a hilly course.
    3) 10k 39:xx (PB 41:57) - As above, but improved PB with 41:53 in April
    4) 10 mile 67:xx (PB 69:10) - Pleased with 67:12 in Dungarvan
    5) Sub 1:30 half (PB 1:37:50) - Solid 1:31:29 in Charleville, leaving room for improvement.
    6) Sub 3:30 marathon (PB 3:35 off road) - Improved to 3:27:15 on a hot day in in Cork

In addition to my original targets, I managed to squeeze in a few more:
    7) 100k - My first ultra, Portumna in 10h37m.
    8) Hill Running - 3 races this year, first time in the hills since 2003
    9) Cross Country - first time competing in 30+ years and came home with a county team medal

So despite the nagging injury I'm pretty happy with the year overall. Especially pleased that I'm back to being competitive in my age group, with three local wins over half marathon, 5miles and 5k. Helps keep me in shoes!

    Roll on 2018 and Belfast...

Not on my list, but an unexpected 4 mile PB of 25:10 today, and just 10secs short of my 5k time en-route. (Perfect conditions in Clonmel today, cool and no wind, both male and female course records broken)

My goals for the forthcoming year will be:
    1) run sub 3.20 marathon, currently (3:24)
    2) 1.30 half....... (1:33:50)
    3) sub 70 for 10 mile (1:10:30)
    4) sub 41 10k (42:20)
    5) sub 19:30 5k (20:03)
    6) I'm starting a training log,so hopefully I'll keep it updated and help keep me on track..
I've listed the goals in order of preference with the 3:20 being the holy grail,if I can hit or get close to the others i feel it'll leave me in good stead come next autumn. I've logged 1100 miles for the year to date so hopefully beat that Too!!!

So here's my end of season report
    1. Run sub 3.20mararhon.. mission accomplished (twice)!! Ran 3:17:29 in Berlin and 3:18:20 in Dublin
2.target 1.30 half , only raced 1 half and that was back in March, hit 1.32 on the day which I was happy with..
3.sub 70 for 10mile, managed to achieve this in frank Duffy, official time of 69.09
4.sub 41 for 10k, I was knocking on the door but nobody answered!!! 41.18 in clonee10k and 41.25 in the lakes 10k, hopefully next year..
5.sub 19.30 for 5k, best I could muster was 19.50 in the jingle bells,I'm not surprised as I do very little speed work.

So I managed pb's across all distances which showed improvement,I managed to stay almost injury free up until mid December so I can't complain too much,I've hit 1500+ miles for the year which swamps last year's total.. only real disappointment was the log fell by the wayside between Berlin and Dublin, I hope to get back logging in the New year as I hope to do Rotterdam marathon in April.

    Will this year ever end?!

Age group PB today of 5:31 for the Mile, with 400m (70s) , 800m (2:30) and 1k (3:18) bests en-route. Yes, I went out too hard!

Indoors Masters to finish the year tomorrow, if my legs aren't shot from today's effort.

Improved that 400m PB to 65.3 sec today indoors.
Over the moon with that, considering no speedwork done since May.

Couldn't even attempt to better the 800m, as they ran it within 10mins of the 400m and I was still gasping.

I'm going to stick with my plans for 2018, but I think that 2019 will be a year to have a proper go at T&F.

    • 5km - try for another sub 30 (29:59 pb this year). Get my average nearer the 30min mark (currently between 31-32mins).
    • 10km - get near the 60 min mark (currently just under 65).
    • Clock up 1,000kms.
    • Last goal for 2017 - run a half marathon. It's been in the back of my mind for some time. But then I found out my goal half is not going ahead in 2017 so this threw me if I'm honest. So now I am considering the Galway half...
1 - Ah came so close to this with 30 mins on the button. Many other runs sub 31 which I was happy with. I made one or two more sub 30 attempts but for some reason the 4th km seems to fall apart for me. Still needs a bit of work...
2 - Chipped away at my 10km pb this year. 64 in April and just under 63 in June. Going the right direction.
    3 - Not quite. Managed 755kms - maybe 1,000 was too ambitious
4 - I did my first half! Picked the Rock n Roll half in Dublin as I figured there would be a big crowd and a good mix of abilities. Delighted to do it, the second part I found hard, definitely as much mental as physical.

Bonus - Got more involved in parkrun by running my 50th parkrun, doing my 25th parkrun volunteering stint in Dec and getting featured on the parkrun weekly newsletter during the year. I stepped outside my comfort zone and started helping out at the juvenile athletics club and have already learned so much. I found myself making some new friends and acquaintances through running. I completed my first (and second) 5 mile races.

Overall I'm pretty happy with how my running went for 2017. I definitely felt I got fitter this year however motivation did wane in the last few months.

First off, I need to work on my core / strength and conditioning if I'm to push on, ignoring it for too long now.

    -5k - sub 20 (PB 20.30)
    -5mile - sub 33 (PB 35.13)
    -10k - sub 42 (PB 42.41)
    -10mile - sub 75 (PB 78.02)
    -Half Marathon - sub 100 (PB 103.48)

I'd like to give XC a try also. Hopefully with a bit more focus and hard work I can achieve most of these this year.
On the S&C front I've gone from ignoring it to nodding as we pass in the corridor - still a work in progress.

    *5k - Sub 20min achieved after numerous attempts - 19:55
*5mile - 3 attempts, 3 fails, didn't even achieve a new PB. Ran my first attempt all wrong, went out too fast, other 2 attempts had poor build up to races, niggle / illness
    *10k - 1 attempt at Fingal, no cigar - 44:06
*10mile - 1 attempt, The Stook in Kilkenny, not a PB course, the hill for mile 6 & 7 saw to that - 78:04 - very much enjoyed this race
*Half Marathon - 3 attempts. 1st in Feb, completely blew up in second half of race, not near enough training done - 1hr56min21sec. 2nd in August, got a PB with 1hr42min30sec. 3rd attempt in December, goal achieved with 1hr39min01sec.

All in all, happy(mostly) with my year, plenty done, more to do.

Mid year review, bit of an eye opener to wonder what I was thinking for some of them. Overall happy enough so far.
1/ Definitely (aided greatly by joining a club) and so/so injury wise
2/ Getting better - I find reading the training logs and race reports is really beneficial. Considering starting a log to help improve in this aspect also.
3/ Nope - DNS - nowhere near ready for this, completely underestimated the training that goes into a marathon.
    4/ 06:41 - should improve a small bit
5/ 22:07 from 1 attempt, hopeful of getting to low 21:00s
6/ 49:13 from 1 attempt, fingers crossed should get this one in the next fortnight.
7/ 01:56:40 - this is going to be a struggle but aiming for Charleville.

Good year running, managed to hit all my realistic goals.
1/ Still loving the running and enjoyed the craic of group training with the club.
2/ Could be better on the mental side when the going gets tough, have a mental block with Half Marathons
    3/ No marathon in 2017
4/ Managed a few 6:30s for the mile
    5/ Did a 21:40 5k
6/ PB of 46:12, 9 minute improvement from the same race 12 months previous
7/ PB of 01:48:05 which I was happy with on the day.

Overall really enjoyed my running and hopefully have set myself for a good 2018.

Agonisingly close to the 5k (22:19 still time to try and get this over Christmas!) and half marathon (1:50:42)
Haven't ran a 10k in ages, so that is off the agenda, last one was 47:45
The most frustrating thing for me is the marathon, best time was 4:17:50, I should be able to comforatbaly do it, but I just die in the last 4 miles, it really need to up the training mileage and work on S&C this year

I suppose I can't complain as I only started taking it seriously this time last year, my first parkrun 13 months ago took over 27 minutes

ran 1:44 for the half today, absolutely delighted, I have been doing weights most days for the last 3 weeks and I felt really great today
