A poor year for the forum really as we had a high attrition rate and less people posting stuff in general. Notwithstanding that, there were some highlights. Some of mine below, in no special order...

    Race of the year (Tri)
Caroline Kearney Tri- its just so well organised, a great route, and always a friendly event.
Two Provinces- another good day out in the midlands...
    Loughrea Sprint- and another...
Wicklow Harbourman- very impressive debut race.
...loads of others on the list too. I must say, most races this year seem well-run, well-supported, well-organised. I think TI deserve large credit for this, they are a good supportive organisation. The club tri scene as well is particularly strong with a good volunteer network. Fair play to all who gave their time in 2016 to help put on such great races.

Tri race report of the year
Zico Ironman Mallorca 2016 Besides the small matter of a perfectly executed race plan, what about the fashion tips in the last photo!

    Training log of the year
Joey100- The difficult second album Great progression throughout.
Zico10- I Am the Master of My Fate The training everyone strives for if only we didn't have that extra pint cake biscuit comfy pillow bowl of rice quarter bowl of rice.
Neady83- Time for a New Adventure I just always enjoy Neady's log and come away happier after reading it.

    Boards performance of the year
Zico Ironman Mallorca- no contest; Boards performance since records began.

    Thread of the year
Lies, bribes and deceit: the tricks to successful training
"In Jan/Feb you should be spending 35-40% of training time swimming"
    Lough Cutra Spectator Fee
A poor year for good threads but I enjoyed all the above.
If you feel any other categories should be added then let us know.
Lest we forget- casualties of 2016
    Oryx
    Tunney
    Shotgun
    Sconhome
    Peter
    etc.

Race of the year (AR) : has to be Iterra. The biggest baddest race in Ireland in years. Epic and spectacular, with Ireland throwing its worst at the racers.

Like Kurt said, I don't think it's been a very vibrant year for our forum and with the decreasing number of regular posters, I fear 2017 will be even worse. What it's down to? I don't really know, but the reality is a few days could go by before there are any posts on the main page and only a handful of training logs are updated on a regular basis. It reflects poorly on the TDAR forum when compared to the AR one from which we split. Of course people are going to drift away, but you'd expect new posters to take their place. I don't see any evidence for the accusations of elitism that are sometimes levelled at us, but it's very seldom a new name posts here.

    Poster of the year
It's between two of our mods for me; pgibbo or mossym. It's to mossy's credit that one of the the threads that got the most replies, was one about peanut butter; http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057569820
Both guys have done their best over the last 12 months to generate chat and keep the forum active. If more of us, myself included, had the same levels of enthusiasm, I think the TDAR forum would be a better place.
And I guess they don't do too bad a job modding the place either.

    Post of the year
    Using the same objective method I used to decide my vote last year, I intended to vote for whatever was the most thanked post on the main forum this year. This search turned out to be a tie and threw up two posts with 22 thanks each. Here they are;
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=99672643&postcount=2
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=99432781&postcount=33
Kurt clearly wins it for humour, but I think the second one by thesimpsons captures the spirit of sport very nicely. I'm undecided between the two and maybe more thanks will materialise for the posts now that I've highlighted them here.

    Race of the year (Tri)
I did four and a half triathlons on Irish soil this year. Three and a half of them, The Gauntlet, Kilkee, Caroline Kearney and The Lost Sheep, I've done before and chose them because I knew they were going to be very well run events; as indeed they were. Although, if I was caught up in the big packs of cyclists I witnessed in Kilkee, I'd have a different opinion on that race. I know it's a recurring complaint year after year, and it doesn't appear much is being done about it.

The other race I did was the Club Relay Championships and I think it deserves special mention. It was the debut year of this format in Ireland and It was hugely successful in my opinion. Some clubs could put together very strong teams and it was really only competitive at the top end for 2/3 teams max. But I think it's a great race for building camaraderie in a club. Activ-Multisport entered several teams and I think if all clubs around Ireland did the same, this will grow to be a standout race on the Irish triathlon calendar.

Tri race report of the year
Not the result he wanted and a hard report to write I imagine, but RJM85's account of his Ironman in Maastricht is very insightful and hopefully he has learned from the experience. You've delivered some very impressive performances at shorter distances and I've no doubt you won't take too long to get it right at full distance.
    http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showpost.php?p=100557643&postcount=234
    This wins it for me.

    Training log of the year
Joey's log is one I always check in on. He's kept it regularly updated throughout the year and it always one reason to check in on boards.
When he was keeping it updated, MD1983's log was also well worth looking at. He's certainly someone I hope to see back here again in 2017.
I'd also agree with Kurt about Neady's log. Despite terrible misfortune befalling her in in her A race this year, the positivity still shines through in every post. It's good to see people enjoying training as much as Neady clearly does.

    Boards performance of the year
I'm not even going to feign modesty, but yours truly in Mallorca.

Other honourable mentions to either of JB's Ironman races and while IM Maastricht didn't quite go to plan for him, I thought RJM85 performed impressively in Tri an Mhí's Olympic distance race back in June. He did well to take the scalp of Peter Kern, even if the latter is slowing down now in old age. :D

    Irish performance of the year
I'm guessing a lot of people will choose either Bryan McCrystal's race at Ironman U.K. or his follow-up in Kona. Part of me suspects this was why the category was included, because I don't remember it being here before. Don't get me wrong, they were both phenomenal races (his bike splits especially so), but in all honesty, I think the best Irish performance has to go to one of our ITU athletes. I don't follow elite level triathlon closely enough to know which way to vote, but one of Aileen Reid or Bryan Keane wins it for me.

    Thread of the year
    Robbie Wade; http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057540329
When Robbie Wade introduced himself here back in January, I thought that this was going to be the standout thread of 2016. It sort of fizzled out in the end though, but it's still worth going back to read. I certainly got something from his brief time here and found him very informative and helpful.

    Swimming; http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057544878
This was another good and informative thread. I'm not sure everybody drew the same conclusions from the video series linked in the thread, but it generated healthy debate, which is the cause d'être of any forum.

    Kona; http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057642205
Had it not been for BMC's bike split, things would have been very different, but his performance in Kona made it an exciting thread to follow for a couple of hours anyway. Hardly enough to make it thread of the year, but it's worthy of mention.

And it's showing on TV at the moment. I was amazed when a few people that have no multisport interests mentioned it to me.

Apologies for the delay in posting this folks.

First off, a sincere thank you to everyone who took the time to vote. Some very valid comments in the thread also about the fallen and the lack of activity on the board. Hopefully we can address this in the new year. If you have any thoughts or ideas please let us know.

The votes have been counted and verified, by my 5 year old son :)

Congrats to all the winners. Zico really stands out in the results this year and rightfully so after a stellar performance in Mallorca.
