Giving my old rig to a friend. Upgrade parts?

Hello,

Having a bit of a clear out and decided to give my old gaming rig to my mate. I think I built it around 2010/2011. Here are the specs of it:

Intel Core i5 780 2.8Ghz
4GB RAM
Nvidia GTX 460 1GB
650W PSU
Gigabyte P55A-UD3 Motherboard

He said he was willing to spend 300-400 max on new parts for it. Upgrade in RAM and possibly a new GPU?

Tbh that is a very poor processor(I think you mean i5 760) and poor chipset. He would be better off getting a whole new system tbh.

It would be fine for older games but would struggle with most new ones or most games online multiplayer, even with the i7.

The original Masher (i5-750, 8Gb RAM, GTX760) has no problems in Overwatch

And close to locked 60fps in BF1 multiplayer

I can say from experience they're slightly cherry picking scenarios/maps for that one, I have an i5-760 here and it in no way, shape or form is close to a stable 60fps online in BF1 in some of the bigger/more hectic maps!

I agree with the i7-860 or 870 though, surprisingly still pretty decent - I've played a good bit of BF1 online with an 870 (at stock) with a GTX670 and in most maps 50-60fps is the norm, worst dips are down into maybe 40's in Quentin Scar, etc. No difference to PS4 or XB1 which also scale from 30-60fps depending on what's happening in MP.

Amazing for a processor from 2009.

I stand corrected, I'd say the original Core series were unbelievable back in the day

Thanks for all the replies. I think he's only going to be using it for playing the older classic games and maybe use it for his own media as well. I'll pass on the info

Ah ok.

In that case, a cheaper upgrade is 4Gb RAM, add 128Gb SSD & a GTX 1050Ti.
Maybe a CPU cooler too if he's comfortable overclocking the GPU.
