or the 64gb version for £224...

Definitely go for the 64Gb version- it has 4Gb RAM- the others are all 2Gb.
For 224 sterling- its a definite buy- over and above the other variants.

Lads and ladies, there's a chance I'm being simple here as I haven't used PayPal within memory but bear with me.

When I try to purchase from the Motorola site I hit a dead end when paying. Having filled in the delivery address (AddressPal) and selecting PayPal as payment option, I hit Buy Now and it takes me to my PayPal account home screen but there's no mention of the phone, or Motorola or anything to do with the transaction so I've no idea how to proceed.

Have I missed something obvious or what have you lot seen when doing a similar transaction? Thanks

You're paying gointerpay who take the money for Motorola.

    Hey folks,
Looking for suggestions for a new compact (4.6 inch-ish) phone for someone who only needs it for basic texting, photos, calls etc.

I'd be leaning more towards higher build quality, battery life etc than a spec powerhouse. Any kind of IP water/dust rating would be great too.

I know the G4 Play is 5" and no IP rating but I've seen videos of it doing just fine in under water tests.

If it can still be got anywhere at £89, it might be too good a deal to miss, but if anyone has any suggestions for alternatives that may be the a little smaller with the IP rating for a similar price, please share.

    I compared the A3 2016 (€200+) and A3 2017 (€300) here: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?&idPhone1=8104&idPhone2=7791&idPhone3=8336

The A3 2017 seems the best for sure, but it's a lot more expensive.

Any feedback would be great :)

Thanks, I've had a thread there for a few days with no response: http://www.boards.ie/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=2057707235 ;(

I was looking up options and came across this thread for the G4 Play so just thought I'd ask here as maybe others had done comparisons with other phones and the G4 play :)

Looks like the G4 and the G4 Play are out of stock on Motorola. Does anyone know how long do they usually take to restock?

G5 was announced (accidentally) a week ago- and is due to launch in a matter of days- stocks of G4s are deliberately being run down. It'll probably be available in small quantities drip fed onto the website and select retailers on an ongoing basis- its the sort of thing you might have to check back every 12 hours or so, as stock is updated. Lenovo have shifted production almost wholly over to the G5 and the Zuks.

The misses picked up the G3 in three recently for 100 euro. It's unlocked and for her the IP rating was the key issue as our kids have spelt stuff over her last few very phones and even thrown one down the toilet.

I just had a look on three.ie there, are you sure it wasn't the Moto E 3rd gen? I can't see the G?

Seems so many different types from the same manufacturers, it's hard to know which is which and why to go for one over the other

Same with Samsung J's and A's!

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

They sold the 3rd gen Moto G for 100 a few months back. Never came back into stock.

Best place to get them now is online with Amazon or similar.

    Try get the 2gb version.

Another option is the cheaper Moto e3 which is in Argos only 1gb though.

Yep, main criteria is some level of water/dust protection, good build quality, durability, good battery life and to be 5" screen maximum preferably 4.6 or so though.

Three has the Moto E 3rd gen for €100 as opposed to €145 in argos :) maybe three is locked though, but maybe not?

Snapdragon 820, 2Gb RAM as standard (up to 4Gb on the plus) choice of 64Gb or 128Gb variants, no 32Gb, supposedly has a 4000mAh battery which gives it up to 12 hours talktime, 7 days on standby or 400 minutes looping an MP4 file @ 720p. Only downside appears to be the screen- which while its full HD (1080p) has a lowish dpi (280) and in testing appears to shatter rather easily (though it does have Corning Gorilla Glass 3 (not 4)). The Portuguese advertisement for the phone- is a bit vague on its resilience (I can't link to the add as its been taken down)- though the specs do seem to be very good for the price. Its a full dual band A/C wifi radio- and has the usual complement of sensors.

It does not have a rating for water resistance and/or durability/endurance. Main selling point- is high specs with a monster battery- if there are kids in the house- avoid at all costs.

Replacement screens already showing up on the stock checker for Lenovo for Ire/UK/France- Ire and Fr price is @ 180 Euro for an original replacement screen. The pre-stocking of replacement screens for the device is a good indication of expected damage/returns.

If you buy one- don't take it out of the box until you switch your insurance over- and for crying out loud- put it in a protective box.

Personally- the leaked specs for the One Plus 5 (there isn't going to be a 4- as the number 4 is unlucky in Chinese)- look to be a hell of a lot better than the G5- but also more expensive. They've handed out O+5s to testers last week- looking lovely- but I suspect the price will mean they don't sell (they're expected to be between 400-500 each, not bad for the specs, but not a lowcost phone any longer).

Deffo the g3, she got it in store last week. White and purple box and the camera and flash on tear are on the longer panel than the E3 has

Thanks a lot for all that. Just had a check and O+5 doesn't appear to have any IP rating either ;(

Looking at phones for 3 people at the mo:

1 & 2) €200 budget, compact (5" or lower, ideally around 4.5"), decent battery, decent durability with some kind of water and dust proofing. Doesn't need to be high performance at all.

    3) For myself, The S7 active was perfect. Waterproof, huge 4,000 mah batter, great camera, great specs overall, fingerprint scanner etc. Would have liked something more compact but was willing to put up with the 5.1" screen for the other features. Bought it from the states (AT&T exclusive) but it was a defective model so had to send it back, will try get another one but after the rigmarole I had with the last one, I've been put off a lot. :(

I don't know of any that match that spec at that price.

All the motos have a water resistent coating sprayed on them. The G4 screen seems tough enough.

Maybe look at getting a G3 on the web somewhere. I've seen the Xperia M5 for about 200, three had it in store for a while. It has known issues. As do many phones.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Been ringing a few three stores but it seems they dropped the price to get rid of stock and nowhere I've tried has them, they don't have phone numbers of the shops on the website though.

It seems the G3 and the G4 play are very similar but the G4 has NFC and SD up to 256GB, but the G3 seems better in every other regard?

EDIT: actually the G4 play is upgradeable to Nougat as opposed to G3 with lolipop and has a bigger removable battery too!

I just decided to check the meteor website and see the Moto e3 for €60 though:
    https://store.meteor.ie/phones/pay-as-you-go-phones/motorola-moto-E3#

Wasn't the one I was interested in, but €60 seems pretty good for what it is?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 22,648 ✭✭✭✭beauf

its slightly slower and not likely to get updates up otherwise seems a good deal to me. its effectively disposable.

    http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=8104&idPhone2=8198

Note all moto carrier phones lock to the first sim inserted. Not hard to get them unlocked. Not tried a E3, I'll probably pick one up as a spare phone though.

looks like it's $17 to unlock via unlockriver.com, have recommended the E3 for one of the people, think I might try get the A3 refurb for the other, or maybe a G3 from amazon warehouse deals for about £95 or might just go for the G4 Play. Rang another Three store and they said there's probably no point trying anyone else for the G3.

Still not sure of one for me to match the S7 Active though :pac:

It doesn't look like it checks carrier websites, I think just the likes of amazon, dealextreme etc?

€59 for the E3 seems like a pretty good price on it now that I've seen prices for it elsewhere.

I tried to refine a search on that site to compare my own requirements and see what else was there instead of the S7 Active, but it didn't even give the S7 active as a result at all. It did give some options not on gsmarena though like Blackview BV6000 and HomTom HT20  which are both IP68 too, but both have the port seals you need to ensure are closed, which is a big pain with my current Z3 compact, especially that I've had to replace the usb one twice already. This isn't the case with the S7 active, the ports are all open and still waterproof as long as you don't get a defective model like I did ;(

I'm hoping the Meteor site is just incorrect here, but it says it can't record video or has no GPS?

But on GSM arena it says it does both, which I thought pretty much every smart phone can these days: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?&idPhone2=8198&idPhone1=7313

Ignore the specs on the meteor website. They seem completely wrong.

You can do that on most network/shop sites even amazon they are often misleading. you need to check the specs on GSM Arena.

    So not going to happen........
Prices still aren't out- but you're probably looking at 400'ish.
Using the G4+ here- managed to get the student discounts to work on Motorola's UK website. Definitely recommend it- if you can get a reasonable discount on it. The 4Gb RAM is overkill- but it makes up for some of the other deficiencies (the processor is fine- the graphics chip however is 100% definitely a weakpoint). Ran a few benchmarks on it last night- was very pleasantly surprised how it fared, however, it is a budget phone, no-matter how you look at it.

More likely its the similar named LG model- not the Motorola. Not a bad phone at all- but not the G5......... Even if it was the LG- its still good value.

Some comparisons of Moto E3 and G4 Play at the mo:

Adding Motorola E3 into the mix:

Motorola E3, 5 Inch - €75 after unlocking (need to buy from meteor website for 60, choose get new number, wait for delivery, then order unlock code for about 15)
This is a good phone for the price, but wouldn't be as good as the others in terms of power and speed.
    Has no NFC
Can't take more than a 32gb SD card

Motorola G4 Play, 5 inch - €140/150 unlocked (order from amazon)
Step up in power from E3
    Better video recording

    Samsung A3 2016, 4.7 inch - €225 unlocked (order from amazon)
    more compact
Better camera than G4 and E3

Samsung A3 2017, 4.7 inch - €315 after unlocking (buy from three store for 300 and spend about 15 on unlock)
water and dust proof (the others are resistant to some extent too, but this is officially rated)
    Always on display
    Finger print scanner
    Better camera
Good bit faster and more powerful than the rest

When you look a tit, there's not so much difference between the one for €225 and €75 but then stepping up another €75 from €225 to €300 or €315 after unlock gets you a fair bit extra. Hmmm!

    ^^^

Just to add that I bought a Moto G4 last week but had to sent it back due to the known and ongoing 'ghost touch' issues when charging.
Maybe the G4 Play isn't affected as much, but that, along with the lack of an LED (charging and messaging) and their fairly poor record of keeping the devices updated with Android security patches put me off.

The difference in the plus is not the RAM. The difference in the plus is a better camera, and finger print sensor.

The regular G4 has 2GB of RAM
Even the lower end G4 Play can be got in either 1GB or 2GB version.
Same the the older G3. 1GB or 2GB version.
The base G4 plus model is 2GB but theres also 4GB model

    Only the networks ones.

Sim free ones bought retail won't have any lock.

At least that the story with the ones we have.

Mine is not locked. I used it as a Temporary phone with my Meteor Sim and then bought the OP3T so I decided to use my Work Sim Card in it(3 Mobile) and it works as it should.

Ditto- I've used a 3UK and a Vodafone Ire SIM in SIM Slot 1 (haven't bothered putting anything in the second slot thus far). No issues encountered.

Anyone any idea what the story with Android 7.0/7.1 (Nougat) is?
