Hi there. We have a Nikkon D40 and when we take snaps it saves them to the SD card in a weird file type (possibly NEF or nikkon raw file not sure) and when we then put the SD card in phone or laptop it always says this file type isn't supported and we can't view the pics. Anyone know what we are doing wrong or how to fix this? Thanks in advance

NEF is nikon's raw format. you should be able to download various different viewers to view the files; e.g. a codec pack from MS assuming you're using windows, or the likes of faststone image viewer.

.NEF would be Nikon's RAW image file format

    2 things you can do

    1. Change the camera settings to save as .JPG. Try Menu > Shooting Menu > Image Quality

    2. Install ViewNX software from Nikon which should allow you to convert those .NEF's to something more user friendly. There's a few different software options from them but if I recall, ViewNX will allow you to convert

Guys thanks so much for your help i changed the format to Jpeg and can now view them on phone and tab and managed to edit the existing photos on the camera to re-save them in the Jpeg format. Much appreciated
