I cancelled Christmas

This year I am not participating in Christmas.

I'm single and usually go to my folks. Not always though as sometimes my brothers do Christmas dinner for the folks.

I can't stand the bull**** anymore. It's not because I'm agnostic, it has nothing much to do with it.

I just think it's the most stupidest time of the year. So much bulli****. Presents, cards, shopping, shopping, shopping, decorations, gorging on food and drink. Woolly jumpers. Taking it too seriously. The list is endless.

People ask me what I'm doing for Christmas and all I can ask myself is what Christmas does for me. Nothing whatsoever , just gives me an unnecessary headache. I'm just not interested in this nonsense that pops up every 10 months.

It drives me nuts when I hear concerns about homeless people, as if it's somehow worse because it's Christmas. Ditto when you hear about fatal car accidents that occur in December, as if it's much much worse when a loved one dies before Christmas as if nothing could be worse than having your Christmas completely ruined.

I have this really gnawing feeling that I have some 'duty' to do Christmas, and I'm sick of it. Christmas is NOT about family. I see my family 24/7. Christmas is about spending money and being a pig.

On the subject of pigging out, most people eat whatever the hell they want all year round. The idea that Christmas is a unique time to pig out is complete nonsense.

So, for once, I will sit back, relax, and watch everyone go mad doing this that and the other, stressing out; and for what ?

It's just not worth the trouble.

Your Christmas can be however you want it to be.
If you don't wish to observe it at all, so be it, but it doesn't have to be a stark choice between that and the excess some people choose.

I did christmas in 3 weeks after everyone few years ago. It was great: No trouble finding stuff and everything was on sale.
It was a great christmas !

Providing the paper work is authorised and stamped correctly I believe he can.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

I beg to differ. I alluded to this point in the OP. I 'feel' I have to do Christmas with all it entails.

I will prolly visit home around the days of xmas but not xmas day itself. That way I'm under no pressure to buy pressies and all that malarkey.

I don't care you can buy a designer scent for 20 quid on sale. It's all just so cheep and shallow.

I'm not doing anything either except squirrel myself away, the last week or so I've been super sad and haven't been able to pull myself together so I'd prefer being by myself rather than make my family/other people look at my long face, ruining their favourite day of the year. Bed, wine, chocolate

Not everyone is stressing and not everyone is going mad. Some people use it as an opportunity to have fun/spend time with their family and friends. If you don't like it that's ok, nobody is forcing you to do take part.

So what you're really doing is dodging getting your family presents under the guise of taking a stand.
    Wish I'd though of that.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,075 ✭✭✭IamtheWalrus

Christmas should happen every other year, like football tournaments. Then I'd get excited about it. I was thinking today that if it was me living alone, I'd probably cancel it too. it's just too often. I've been unhappy for a good few years now and I sometimes wonder would I actually like Xmas if I was happy. I'd say probably yes.

No. I have told them not to buy me any presents.

Edit: I have told my intimidate family I'm not doing xmas and have specifically told them not to buy me gifts. I'm totally serious about this, it's not a joke.

I would say every 4 years, like the Olympics.

Edit: I hope your not suggesting the reason I'm not doing Christmas is because I'm unhappy. Is rushing around stressing out about what gifts to buy people going to make you happy ? I don't think so. Ditto for the gifts you receive. Are they going to make you happy?

Such seasonal customary deviations from normal social intercourse are not everyones cup of tea. Some people have not got the extra money to spend on what is perceived to be social obligations to "fit in" and "be normal".

Some people have not learnt the gentle but essential art of telling the world to leave me alone and buck off.....

Most young people are in temporary and low paid employment, if they are employed at all. A lot of people are in rental accommodation and are only 1 or 2 paycheques away from homelessness and health compromising living arrangements if the job goes pearshaped in the new year.

Yet our national TV and media are advocating a spend, spend spend agenda as if everything is alright and all jobs are safe and nothing bad will happen.

There will be lots of rows and arguments over the spending at Christmas.

There will be lots of dissappointed children not getting what they want and some will be homeless unless their parents can resist the temptation to overspend and be left short for essentials in the new year.

In the uncertain times we face with the continuing erosion of middle class values and certainties Christmas as we knew it needs to be cut back drastically for most people.

This is complete nonsense. One is expected to take part in xmas. One is a bahh humbugg if one doesn't. The whole point of me not doing xmas is precisely because I'm expected to participate in it.

I sent zero xmas cards this year. Who want's one of those cheep 50 pack cards anyway. Oh how thoughtful. Merry xmas and a happy new year to glue.

I will enjoy the days surround xmas, spend time with my friends and family, but not that awful claustrophobic day.

Christmas for me is solely about the kids. I don't have any but my nieces and nephew make all the bull**** worth it. Before that I was like the op. All this seventh heaven bull**** is for facebook. Most people have the same ' oh God let this be over ' issues. The only saving grace is the kids! ........
    {Yes .....I also believe the children are the future ;) }

You imagining that people have expectations of you != people forcing you.

Here's a secret, most people get lost in tradition/religion/spirituality/consumerism/hype/worthy causes and whatever else to distract themselves from the fact that life is ultimately meaningless. And because it feels good. You can make your own meaning or you can imagine you are being 'forced' to take part. It's up to you.

Edit: It's like I know Star Wars isn't real but I love it anyway, because 'pew pew pew' lasers in space is fun.

So basically - time off work, getting pissed, hanging with friends and family on all days except the 25th. That's just doing Christmas except the bits that annoy you. It would be like me not visiting my in laws on the 26th because commercialization.

My folks have decided to opt out of Christmas this year and it's killing me. They'll do presents with my niece and then just stay home for the day. We were always really family orientated around Christmas so the thoughts of them at home alone is breaking my heart.
