Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

sore hands from deadlifts

    My hands are getting sore from heavy deadlifts. I probably would have another 2-3 reps in me but my hands cant take the pressure as the weight seems to eat into them.

    Any solution? Would chalk be a help?

    Chalk will help to an extent ... but heavy deadlifting and sore hands go hand in hand.

    As your grip weakens with the heavier weight it will start to rip. Concentrate on your grip.

    Look after the callous' on your hands afterwards ... pear them down so they don't rip at the next session

    You can get Lifting straps which will take some of the pressure off your grip

    If you're grip is holding you back from progressing in the deadlift then you should probably get yourself some straps.

    But also work on the grip. Things like holding the bar for as long as you can at the end of your last working set of deadlifts.

    The more the bar moves down your hand the more it will hurt. Look at my post in the thread about gloves, that'll stop most of the movement so long as you do it with an alternate grip.
    If you get sufficiently amped up it really shouldn't hurt and if it does it should only hurt afterwards and be not all that sore if your grip is right.
    If lads can lift 461 like benni there's nothing stopping us mortals doing normal weights

    I dunno about you guys, but using a belt on my heavier lifts eased my grip issues..i am sure there is a science there that someone can quote verbatim to why this is

    you read a lot about gloves/no gloves - straps/no straps

    I use mixed grip with liquid chalk, that worked to a certain weight, now I have added the belt for the heavier lifts.

    would I be right in saying that maybe there is a place for all the above - gloves, straps, belts - it just depends on the individual? or are we doomed to have the same old conversations and arguments over and over again about gloves, straps and belts?

    Don't know about anyone else, but it does get tiring IMO

    (sorry OP I hope there is an answer in there somewhere for ya)

    What grip are you using? Overhand, mixed or hook?

    I find that using a mixed grip and switching hand each set really helps.

    I don't really train heavy anymore. When I did, my callouses were about the same as they are now, minimal. I used chalk on every deadlift. It could be some sort of genetic thing or related to skin type, but I am not sure everyone will develop thick callouses from deadlifts.
