Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

I know this is just the 'cool' thing to say when some-one famous passes but this is one case where it's particularly hard to believe.

It's possible s/he's never heard the name of the actress before, especially if they're younger. Not knowing Princess Leia is a massive step though, transcended the Star Wars universe and is really a pop culture icon. Not sure why you'd bother commenting on a dedicated thread if you've never heard of her though....

  • Registered Users Posts: 7,537 ✭✭✭KKkitty

Whether you knew who she was or not grow up!! A mother has lost her daughter, her siblings have lost a sister and her friends have lost a friend. How many actresses were inspired by her and went into acting because of her. She was so funny as a guest on chat shows. She seemed like such an amazing person who may have been small in stature but big in comedic timing and charisma. Poor Gary will miss her. She never went anywhere without him it seemed :(

    Quite an unprecedented death.
    Indeed.

There's people dying that have never died before.

R.I.P :( ...another little piece of my youth dead.

They're coming thick and fast now. I wonder who'll be next. Keith Richards had surely gotta be watching his every step now. :p

The joke was a gentle pun on one of his songs. Not disrespectful.

Just out of Star Wars Rogue One, the notification came through as I was watching it. Seemed poignant particularly with the last scene.

they care enough to post about how they really don't care though. Why bother?

Anyone who claims they don't know who Princess Leia is must have been living in a cave for the past 40 years. Or they are lying

Carrie Fisher isn't *that* famous. I know plenty of people who haven't seen Star Wars, and she hardly had a stellar career after that.

If you come onto a thread like this comment then you must in some way know who the person being discussed is. Otherwise, as you say, why bother?

Claiming not to know Princess Leia or who played her is a stretch too far for me.

Like I said it's just an attempt to be cool and edgy....and frankly it gets tiresome thread after thread.

I'm not a right wing bigot, but I find it a very appropriate term. People are such drama queens these days. The slightest thing causes offense, these days.

Or maybe people haven't seen Star Wars and don't know who she was? Not like she was a movie legend in a Clint Eastwood/De Niro mould.

Ohmigod I grew up listening to her music in the eighties.

Now she is in heaven with Jason Donovan.

And Google is only an internet tab away for cases like these.

Posting 'Who?' or 'I don't know who that is' is a stupid thing to do, and it can only be designed to annoy other posters.

If you asked me this morning who played Princess Leia I wouldn't have been able to give you an answer.

I couldn't be arsed with Star Wars, I'd heard of Princess Leia but just don't know the cast. I'm sure there's plenty of others.

I also wouldn't be arsed with going into a thread to state that I don't know her for no reason at all.

Maybe I'm getting very old, but there seems to have been too many celebrities/actors/musicians/broadcasters etc that have died this year, 2016.

May they all rest in peace, the world will miss their presence.

Yes, it was. Your sexuality doesn't give you a free pass on mocking his death.

I absolutely agree with you on Leia. Not knowing Carrie Fisher by name isn't that far of a stretch for, say, an 18 year old. Same goes for Mark Hamill, I'd argue a lot more people would know the name character's name Luke Skywalker than they would his actual name.
