Look at them individually and honestly, Prince was the only shocker to me.

Most of the others had known health and/or 'lifestyle' issues, or like Leonard Cohen were of relatively advanced age. Or indeed, had both known health issues, and were also of relatively advanced age, like Ali or Castro.

Prince was the shocker because he was known for being clean-living, always looked very trim in public appearances, didn't have any known health or drug issues, and was relatively young.

When Morgan freeman dies no one will believe it because he must have a hoax death once a year.

Most lived to a very good age a lot lived a very hedonistic lifestyle and did well to live to the age they did.

More celebs living = more celebs dying.

2017 will probably be worse, as will '18, and so on and so forth.

Anthony Foley was quite shocking. Relatively young in his early 40's right? A recently retired pro athlete, good physical condition.

There are probably loads more. Just listed off a few off the top of my head. I guess miss Gabour didn't have much of an impact on me. Also a quick wiki search tells me she was 99 years old. She had a good innings.

We always lose celebrities each year. 2016 will be remembered as the year we lost a lot of the big icons of music and acting.

        2016 will soon join them, karma's a bitch.

Because he sucked and his music was dirge, laughed at and scorned by the critics, just pretty boys from California singing to teenage girls.

Was that why he wasn't in the same bracket as Bowie and Prince?

Give it a few years and we'll have all the "Celebrity Youtuber" deaths. That'll be some thread.

Reading the comments section on FB about George Michael and people saying they're "bawling right now" or "in pieces", I don't get that at all, it's not as if they knew him personally.

Boards was down at the time, so there was very little on here.

As a huge Eagles fan, his was actually the death that saddened me most this year.

Followed by Alan Rickman - not that old, and not known to be ill (at least by me), and that I (sort of) met him during the filming of Michael Collins made it hit home a little more than others.

I don't personally know David Attenborough, but as a nature doc lover he's been a big part of my life since I've been a kid - so when he goes, I know it will have a big effect on me

I would say it's the same for people who are big fans of George Michael

Hate the nonsense of "2016 stop killing the stars".

It's not the year doing it ya tubes, it's old age, ill health, bad lifestyles, drug abuse etc. As someone said, are we going to have this every year now? A celeb deathcount as each year progresses? Love the listing of huge celebs like Paul Daniels, jez get a grip folks. And I have not heard of a fee of those listed.

Hang around, I'm guessing they aren't telling us the truth about old Quennie, and I wouldn't be surprised to see her go in the not too distant future. You only think you've had celebrity deaths, wait til she goes, it'll be wall to wall coverage for a month.

Alot of the pop singers from the 80s, are now 50 or 60 ,
so of course they are of the age when they might die ,
and many of the people who write in the media grew up when prince and george michael were big stars .
The eagles greatest hits is one of the biggest selling cds of all time ,
so i think their audience was alot wider than teenage girls .
They appealed to rock music and country music fans .
Those people sold millions of cds as opposed to just getting streamed on spotify or apple music .
You can be a pop star now by appearing on tv shows ,being streamed on
spotify ,youtube without selling a million records .

Boutros Bourtros Ghali and Shimon Peres.
Neither exactly a shocking death (both were aged 93) but still quite big players on the world political stage.

It's because of Bowie and Prince that people are making a big deal of it. Both iconic figures, and neither were especially old.

Bowie's health had long been a source of speculation, but less so since his 2013 comeback, and his illness was not public knowledge; more people were probably half-expecting a tour announcement than were half-expecting his death.

          Prince was completely unexpected.

We won't unexpectedly lose two figures of their stature many years.
