    Hello,

I recently purchased a Canon 700D camera with 18-55mm lens, however I would like to try a longer range zoom lens for wildlife photography particularly birds. Within reason price wise! Could anyone help?

    Thanks.

    Define a reasonable price?

Canon 100-400mm lens? Maybe consider 2nd hand lenses?

250- €400 I'd say. Yeah possibly 2nd hand might be best, but you think that 100-400 lens would be suitable?

That's a very small budget for getting a long lens.

100-400mm lens is a decent lens with good reach. Fine when you have some decent light, but not great in dull days, especially for birds in flight. Otherwise it's a very good wildlife lens.

Thank you, yeah I realise that it is small. Any suggestions on where 2nd hand lenses may be advertised?

Adverts.ie and donedeal. You could try your local camera store as they might have 2nd lenses.

    I use a 70-300 lens,which requires a LOT of cropping of the image . Unfortunately,what you would like (500 mm,say) is expensive.
But,even with a 300 mm lens, you can get great shots.
Like this shot of a kingfisher from about 30 metres

Thanks for that. That image is really good. I think 300mm would be a great start to get me going.

I have the above lens and to be honest in my view it's not a lens for bird photography!

You can get a 70-300mm lens well within budget (under €250 for a Sigma), a Canon 55-250 for under €350. If you come into some money in the near future then have a look at Sigma's 150-600mm lens, it's nearly €1,100 - but ideal for wildlife.

I'm well aware of its shortcomings but for the price(2nd hand)and a learning curve, reasonable pictures are possible.

    The 100-400 L mk1 is a fantastic lens .. it might be priced decently 2nd hand .. $800 or so ..

The 100-400 is perfect for wildlife. I've used it to shoot Grizzly Bears.
