To be fair Gaybo was out of his depth - Letterman was the only man able to interview one of the greatest showmen ever. As for Mrs Waits, an amazing accomplice for the eyeball kid from the first day they met

Don't think Gaybo's being an ass at all.

There's a directness to his questions that may seem blunt in comparison with the chummy approach chat show hosts are more likely to adopt today & Tom's being louche, a touch pissy & acting as if it's a real chore to engage in a bit of small talk, as the format demands.
