Do they exist? The data science roles I have seen all seem to require 2+ years industry experience so would not really apply to a graduate. There are tonnes of software engineering graduate programs but none for data science from what I can find . Has anyone else found anything?

Just wondering how you got on with this? Did you find anything?

Just trying to gauge the supply/demand dynamic here for data science and machine learning.

There seems to be a major shortage in the states that just doesn't seem to be reflected in Ireland for some reason.

There is a tremendous shortage here too. Contracts paying €600/day upwards, and they still can't fill the roles (unsurprising, as fully remote contracts operating out of the UK pay even more). Even at a €1000/day, I doubt many openings here in Ireland could be filled. I actually could agree there is a genuine skills shortage in that one field in Ireland - roles which can't be filled for any pay.

But the OP is right, everybody wants skilled engineers with many years of experience. Nobody wants to employ a graduate or train anyone in. Stupid, but maybe the employers are thinking it's a bubble, and not worth investing in people for?

Is it the same for machine learning engineers. As in software developers who specialise in machine learning?

I know two lads that I graduated with this year, who landed Machine Learning jobs with Jaguar Land Rover. This is after taking only one module in Machine Learning, so there's at least one company out there hiring grads for ML.

Also, I don't doubt that Niall is correct, in that companies want skilled engineers over training grads up, but there are junior roles out there. Case in point - our college gave us a list of jobs that were sent in by employers, with experience required listed as 1 - 5 years.

So, maybe us grads shouldn't be put off applying for a job that has those requirements.
