where did this persistent band of snow come from all of a sudden????

A trough line perhaps, or even a polar low, certainly the 500hpa temp is conducive to one forming in such an unstable flow.

We went from a situation from the northwest and southwest getting all the snow and a low pressure system running down the west coast to a situation where the low is running down the irish sea now giving a band of snow crossing the whole country. I do believe in Santa Claus.:D
