If I used it every day to get in and out of work the free pass would be worth €1200 or so a year for me just doing that alone, never mind going intercity on bus or rail.

My favourite is the old codgers I know who use the free travel to go up north every week and blow their pension.

The whole FREE travel thing is a gigantic red herring and if it was done away with in the morning CIE would still be a disaster. There's something to be said for a small charge but not something that's going to be increased in every budget.
