In 1922, Danish physicist Niels Bohr won the Nobel prize for his ground breaking work on atomic structure. So proud were the Danes of this achievement, the Carlsberg brewery gave him the free gift of a house next door. The best perk of the house was that it contained a special tap linking directly to the brewery so that Bohr and the other physicists who came to work at Bohr's Institute of Theoretical Physics had free Beer on tap while they worked on the foundational principles Quantum Mechanics in the follwing years.

In 1901 Ferdinand Porsche developed the Lohner-Porsche Mixte Hybrid, the first gasoline-electric hybrid automobile in the world. The hybrid-electric vehicle did not become widely available until the release of the Toyota Prius in Japan in 1997, followed by the Honda Insight in 1999.

Porsche did give the hybrid concept another go with this vehicle:

They sound tough, but what if you hit them with a tiny hammer?

Continuing on the World Cup trivia, our other neighbours Scotland hold the record for the most appearances at the tournament without ever progressing beyond the first round/group stages (eight in total).

At this summers World Cup in Russia, the distance between the easternmost host city (Ekaterinburg) and the westernmost host city (Kaliningrad) at the 2018 World Cup is over 1500 miles. For comparison, that’s about the same distance as Moscow to London.

Another World Cup trivia - Robert Prosinecki is the only player to score for two countries. Yugoslavia in 1990 and Croatia in 1998.

Spare a thought for poor FC SKA-Khabarovsk, in the Russian Premier League. They're 5500 miles from pretty much all of their rivals, as they're on the Pacific coast.

The very odd time, there's teams from French Polynesia and New Caledonia in the South Pacific that get into the French Cup, that's 10000 miles + one way.

Another WC trivia, Diana Ross missed the first penalty in the World Cup In USA 1994

It's theoretically possible for a team from French Guyana (in South America) to meet Luch-Energiya Vladivostok (in Asia) in the Europa League. It would involve a round-trip of almost 20,000 miles, and is the longest possible trip in European football.

This is a great little article on UEFA.com about some of the geographical extremes in European football.

you must be going in the wrong direction. If you go east from Vladivostok across the pacific it is less than 10000 miles

Round trip means you have to go back home again.

She was closer than Baggio was when he missed the last penalty of the tournament!

The first team from outside Europe and the Americas to make it to the knockout stages of the World Cup was.....North Korea! They played their matches at Middlesbrough's home ground Ayresome Park. They caused a major upset in the group stages by beating Italy 1–0 and gained a spot in the quarter-finals. There, they lost 5–3 to Portugal, despite taking a 3–0 lead after thirty minutes. Not a bad showing, Portugal were quite the formidable team back then (as they are now) and had the likes of Eusébio in their ranks.

Four countries that played in 1990 didn't exist by 1994:
    Yugoslavia (QFs)
Soviet Union (4th in Group B)
    West Germany (Winners)
    Czechoslovakia (QFs)

Peru have not qualified since 1982, the longest that any team have been "away" from this years World Cup.

Iceland and Panama are the two teams to qualify for the first time.

4 out of 6 Continental champions did not qualify: Chile, New Zealand, USA and Cameroon.

Italy are the only previous winners who did not qualify.

Now they no longer have Nobby Solano, they're further again.

So is this a football trivia thread now?

Unsubscribing until after the World Cup.

These things go in stages. There might be a page or two of science related stuff, maybe stuff related to various wars etc. But yes, football is quite popular and with the WC on the way you will probably see that reflected in the thread.

    To get back on topic...

During Prohibition, moonshiners would wear "cow shoes." The fancy footwear left hoofprints instead of footprints, helping distillers and smugglers evade police.

Mel Blanc based the Bugs Bunny voice off actor Humphrey Bogart.

The lisp and thick NYC accent.

Bogie was initially offended by it, but eventually came around to the idea. He made a few guest apperances on Looney Tunes before his death

Futsal is a massively popular sport in Europe, especially Spain and Portugal. The EUFA club final is on today between Inters FS, Spain and Sporting, Portugal. The venue in Zaragoza holds 10,700 spectators. The sports gets a lot of TV coverage as well.

Futsal is the official name for 5 a side / indoor football. Ireland has an international Futsal team.

Isn't the ball way heavier? Read an article once where a lot of Brazilian players credit their ball control to playing with the much heavier futsal ball, because most of them have a background in it growing up.

Goalie was off the line. Should have been retaken.

I also noticed an incursion in the penalty box.

That's right. The heavy ball never leaves the ground. It's all about touches. Left foot, right foot. Caressing and controlling the ball. As opposed to hoofing the ball up in the air on a full size pitch with lots of kids running around with the fastest, fittest and strongest excelling. The late Jimmy Hill spent half his life trying to import and set up fussball for english kids to develop skill.
