Finished it on the pc ages ago. Replaying it on the Switch now. It plays really well but if you played it recently on the Xbox, I’d wait.

Thanks dude. Appreciate the info. It might drop by black Friday or something like the 3 for 2 amazon deals.

Definitely not buying it digitally though. Way too big to be squeezing on an sd card for me anyways.

Hardly botched if there was a post-release/post-production patch. Absolutely standard in this day and age on all consoles. Some PS4/XB games have day one patches that are tens of gigs in size. The Outer Worlds had a 38GB day one patch.

Yeah, the sad truth is that the game on the cart/disc is often little more than a key to access the up-to-date patched game code which is immediately downloaded.
I think it was Gran Turismo 5 on the PS3, not only did you have to contend with a massive day one download but you also had the awful Sony servers at the time, meaning it took simply ages to download, just so you could play the game!
In fact, the time it took to download the patch and play was more than the trip to the shops to buy it in the first place!
I guess, it's the benefit of going digital for your games, the downloaded code is the updated/patched version from the get-go.

For starters you can ask why is this game 3 times the size it is on PS4/XB1? It was around 5-6GB on PS4/XB1 and on the eShop it's 16.2GB for the base game, the DLC is extra money and space. The physical release includes the game and DLC, but the DLC has to be downloaded. When you look at Super Mario Odyssey which is 5.7GB, or massive open world games like Breath of the Wild and Xenoblade Chronicles 2 at 13.4GB and 14GB respectively, it seems ludicrous that the file size for A Hat in Time is so big. While Nintendo take the time to optimise their games, some 3rd parties don't care and say well that's the consumers problem when it comes to physical releases and storage.

Also, justifying sloppiness on other platforms doesn't make it alright for it to happen on Switch.

The game doesn't have that manky download required banner on the box art. I don't know if they got away with it because technically you don't have to download the DLC if you don't want to. But there’s further questions like does it come with a one-time download code for the DLC in the box or does just owning the game allow any user to download it?

I think the Switch version is bigger so they don't have to decompress content (which would slow it down).
    Performance vs. File Size?

I think you're making a mountain out of a molehill, to be honest.

Developer may not have decompressed the audio files as much as Nintendo do? I remember Digital Foundry mentioning it I'm done if their Switch reviews (Dark Souls was one I think).

Edit: Mr E beat me to it.

There's also the factor of possibly having two sets of assets, with lower-res textures etc being used for handheld mode, and higher for docked. The lack of compression on assets, be they textures, audio or video files would also make a monumental difference, as already mentioned.

I don't know of another game on other platforms coming to Switch where the file size tripled in size for what is a very noticeably inferior version. They're a small Indie developer, maybe they don't have the talent to cope with optimisation. You see games like Spyro Trilogy going from 67.5GB on PS4 to 15GB on Switch, and there are many other examples doing the opposite of the AHIT developers.

I think it's pretty obvious that it's uncompressed data for the switch version. Compressed data is a massive CPU resource strain and in a system like the switch where the CPU is a big bottleneck then it makes sense. Uncompressed sounds and textures can balloon a games size.

Playing this on PS4 and its great fun. If it runs well on the Switch I'd be tempted to double dip as there's loads of options for going through missions. The dialogue is really makes it.
