My Renault Megane GT review

I have my Megane GT over a week now and someone in the 171 thread asked if I was doing a review so here is a quick one.

The car is a 1.6l Petrol with 205hp.

Overall I really like the car, the handling and suspension make it a joy to drive on Irish regional roads which is where my daily driving is done, the power is very nice and the auto dual clutch gearbox isn’t bad, with the paddles if you want to take control.

The front seats are really nice and snug bucket style seats, I have the standard trim for the GT. The rear seats are comfortable too, the leg room isn’t huge but it’s enough if like me you rarely have more than one passengar.

The boot is pretty good with standard enough room for a hatch, there is an emergency type spare wheel also.

The large screen is pretty responsive and easy to use, it is taking a while to get used to touchscreen buttons for controlling the heating fan speed and direction, although the buttons are large so you don’t end up hitting the wrong buttons.

The interior lightning is really nice and adds a nice feel to the car, the LED headlights are very good.

Fuel efficiency is at about 8L/100km at present but thats mainly short trips and some “testing” the power :D

Launch control is a bit of a fun feature but I’ve only tested once.

I had a Nissan Leaf EV before this so my driving style had become very reserved so it will take a while to get used to the power of this, the last time I had something with decent power was my Subaru Legacy 2.5l Petrol many years ago.

If you are after a serious high performance hot hatch then this probably won’t meet your expectations but if you want a warm hatch that is fun to drive but also some what practical then I think you will like it, mind you if you a doing a good bit of milage you might want to wait for the Diesel version.

External Photos below, I'll try take some interior ones tomorrow.

Is the auto locking thing annoying, read a review that suggested it was a bit of a pain if you have passengers? Assume you can turn it off.

I had it on my 2011 Megane and loved it, then my wife got a new Kadjar last year and that feature was gone, tbh I really like it and the Mirrors auto fold as it locks also.

Is it true that you can end up locking your passengers/kids in when you get out?

Haven't tested it but I guess that is possible, although I must test if they can open from inside

It's a great looking car. Renault have come on leaps and bounds over the last 10 years. Well wear.

    Thanks OP
It was I asked you to post the review as these Meganes caught my interest as a possible next car.
It was the estate version I was considering ( I know, Odd ball me ) :D

Sounds like a decent place to be.
Economy will improve as you get more relaxed in it I assume. How is the road noise in it? Quiet cabin?

Thanks for the review and look forward to updates as you go .

Best auto locking I've had was on a the wife's 11 grand megane. There was no doubt that it was activated.

    Well wear OP, very nice

My 1.4 Civic does 7.5l/100km, all short trips, never really knew if that was good or bad,

Much prefer the auto lock on the wife's Fluence than having to use the fob on the Civic

Pretty sure that the auto lock on the Renault will operate once you walk away with the keycard even if someone still in the car but the doors can be opened from the inside if needed

Cabin isn't bad but going from an EV it's hard to compare, a little quieter than EV on smoother surfaces imo

Was looking at the saloon version of the megane as well - Quick question - The LED Lights, is it much of an upgrade over standard halogen ?

They are good but I wouldn't be paying for an upgrade if it's option tbh

If it is really quieter than Leaf with larger tyres, it should be very well insulated noise wise.

Disclaimer : Never been in a Leaf so it is just hearsay from Leaf owners that how silent it is

Leaf is silent at low speeds but still plenty of road noise once you get moving, the long roll rating tyres are noisy.

Mk8? I get in and around 7l/100km for mostly short journeys (but not entirely) so it's about right.

As for the Megane, I love the rear lights at night. Was following one the other day and had no idea what it was until I was up its arse :D

I really really love it and good write up. I would even love maybe a dedicated sub forum for stuff like this.
I would love to know people's opinion on cars like this, which are really new.

In reality this car would be perfect for me, but no way I cam afford it. :(

    Megane GT ...

How would you rate the EDC? How hesitant is it? How fast would it down-shift when you boot the car?

I always find the most difficult test is braking with the engine for a while and then flooring it - exp. slowly approaching to the RB and then seeing a bit of space trying to accelerate.

It's OK, I can see why some reviews were mixed on it, for day to day driving it's fine, if you are pushing a little then you might yourself fighting with it a little.

The multiple downshift is nice and once you get used to it then it works well.

I didn't comment on the 4 Wheel Steering in my review actually, I find that really really nice, parking and tight spaces are great and once you get used to it, cornering is really good, feels like you have someone helping you steer :D

Did I spot you in North Dublin this morning? Seen one of these in the same color, nice motor and rare enough that when I saw it I thought of your review.

Usually you have an option to tick in the R Link screen to use or not use the auto locking.

And if get out with the key in your pocket the car will lock.

    You get used to it.

Great to see a nice non-diesel for a change. Car looks lovely OP,

After many German cars etc for a long time, we bought a (used) Megane GT Tourer last year, and it was great to be back in newish comfortable car that didn't break the bank. I also found it more comfortable than the current Audi's etc.....

Ours has EDC too, and I've found it very good.

Hi, Just wondering what the real world l/100km average is at this point in time. V interested in buying one of these. I do above average mileage but fancy a change from the diesel. I have a 110bhp Kadjar, a bit lacklustre for my liking.... Mid life crisis box ticking exercise beckons. 😀

I have also heart from a few users that this generation of Megane does not have nice seats... Horrible actually.

Seats in mine are amazing tbh, test drove a Focus ST with a mate last week, seats were nowhere near as good as mine.

Fuel consumption is around 8.3l with short commutes on rural roads

Great to hear that. GT probably has different seats than the common on.

Op any update on how you are getting on with the car now after having it a while ? What’s the fuel consumption like now still around the 8L/100km or has it dropped I assume it would do better than that on a long journey but that’s not bad either. How do you find the auto gearbox ?
