Have you tried all the above recommendations since you posted last, you said you would? Who was best?

I've been to a few of them and the results varied. The problem is that on return visits either the barber who did a good job last time isn't there or there's a queue and I'm not a great one for passing up my turn to wait for the barber of choice, particularly when other barbers there are idle. I feel it'd mean to bypass them to wait up for someone who is already busy - anyone else ever feel that way ?
The thing is, I'm well past the days of modern cutting edge styles and just want a neat cut that won't look like it needs trimming again in a week ur two, due to varying lengths of regrowth. I ask simply for a number 3 or 4 with scissors trim and no parting , but I invariably get all types of dude parting , comb overs etc !
Of those I've tried , I've found a couple of the regular ( established ) barbers in Ali's on Eyre Sq. ok, also Fat Tony's in Middle St.
I tend to stay away from some of the younger set barbering places as I'm not too confident that these guys really cater for those nit wanting the latest cuts/ styles. One thing I do know is when a barber starts to cut my hair I know how it's going to turn out - I get the feeling that some work really confidently , knowing exactly what they're at, while others just seem to be chancing their arm ?
It's not that I want an old style short back and sides but some of their attempts at a simple layered near and tidy look seems to be beyond them ?

Have you tried the barbers chair so?. One barber, simple clean cuts like the short back and sides, neat scissors trim on top like you describe..

If you're very particular about it (not meant as a criticism) you might be better off trying a hairdressers. Plenty of them have someone who does guys hair. It might be a few euro more than a barber shop but they are more skilled.

They would be less experienced and no way as skilled. Cutting men's and cutting ladies is a completely different profession and skill.
Most barbers do however come from a ladies background. They'd have developed a good skill with the scissors and then razor work would be more developed in barber work.
Even an experienced ladies hairdresser would need a few months of training to make the transfer over

OP for what it's worth just take 2minutes with a barber and talk about what you want to get done. Stick to that barber if you like them. Barbers are well used to having a lad wait for one specific barber, it's the nature of the business

I've always found Ali's on Eyre Square very good.

I think you are talking about ladies hairdressers. I am talking about mens hairdressers who are more skilled and experienced at cutting hair than what you get in a barber shop. There are hairdressers in Galway that have guys who specialise in cutting in mens hair - Zenith and Momento are two. If you're looking for a number 3 on the back and sides and scissors trim on top then yes, a barber is your only man.

I would say the exact opposite about Crew, the one on shop street. I think that all they care about is the fast-in-fast-out €10 haircut and don't put any time into the cut Just about getting as much people and money in an hour as they can. I went in there around 18 months ago, At the time I had a topknot and I wanted to keep it and asked not to cut it off. The hairdresser cut it off and realised half way through what she had done and tried to rectify it but ended up ruining my hairstyle at the time and I then had to cut my long hair a long bit off 2 days later just to make it look like I had a normal haircut.

I would recommend Cut Throat Barbers. it is more expensive but you do get a great cut with plenty detail put into each cut. You have to reserve a booking slot, and through this the barber can get used to your hair. This helps with consistency for sure. And no queues as you have your assigned time! Can book through facebook.

I tend to use either Alis in Eyre Sq or The Edge in Corbett Court opposite Jack Jones - I get a very basic haircut so if you are after a particular style they may not suit

Hair Republic in Westside Shopping Centre and Kozzys in GSC are two I alternate between. I don't like talking to them as they do their job as with all the noise I can't hear properly and the whole thing becomes a strain. But both of those are good and they are not rushing you along. Herman's also in the GSC used to do men although I don't think they do anymore.

No mention yet of Turk's on the Dublin Road towards Renmore.

    Imo, the best in Galway.
I get hair & beard trimmed. Always top notch. Sounds like a similar haircut to what you're looking for, OP.
They have 4 barbers. I use 3 of them regularly, and avoid one. (Just not a fan - a fine barber, too).
There is no problem with waiting for your preferred barber to become available. It seems a lot of their clients have a preferred barber.

Have seen them all do different styles and working from pictures, etc.

I know it's a bit further out but Arch Barbers in Claregalway have 2 ladies in there that I have been going to for over a decade, regardless of where I'm living (Tuam, Galway, Athenry etc).

They have signs up specifically stating that your more than welcome to wait for the barber of your choice so the others never take offence if you say you want to wait.

I've a beard and several cows licks and these girls do a fantastic job every time. Anytime I've gone somewhere else I've always found fault.

They give a lot of little extras like beard oiled, hair tonic etc which make it a nice experience. But I don't know if it's because I leave a decent tip each time or if it's normal.

I also get it washed after the cut. There's nothing I hate more than bits of hair stabbing me when it gets stuck in my shirt or t-shirt.

Price for wash, cut and beard trim, 17 eur

Students are ten elsewhere so that seems poor value to me.

    Thank you.

If barber prices are cheaper elsewhere it doesn't mean the more expensive barbers are poor value as you say. Far from it.

I wouldn't go to a barber who charges cheaper if I felt another barber did a better job at a (reasonably) more expensive price. That would be poor value to me.

Yes but if the one charging less does a good job, which they do, then the 12 is poor value!!!!!! There's no way around that.

Try one of the 10 euro ones and then next time try the 12 euro one.
Whichever you are personally happy with wins..

I'll stick with the cheaper, good quality one, thanks for the advice though.
