Hi, I'm considering getting one of these as I've been reading good things. Not sure if I need the Echo or just the Dot, does the Dot work without having an Echo? Or do you need an Echo first?

Is there much difference in both? Other than about £100 in price.

They are two separate devices, one doesn't need the other. The functions are the same except the Echo has a good quality speaker built in where the dot only has a speakerphone quality speaker built in. The Dot can be connected to an external speaker via cable or Bluetooth.

Not remotely impressed myself with the Echo. For a start, trying to get the app onto my iPhone was a joke - I'm sure I missed the health warning when I was buying it that it is not intended for sale in Ireland but assuming I did, it was extremely frustrating trying to get the app for my phone. I read other posts saying it was "easy" to change my location in the app store to look like I was in the UK. Bull****. I needed to assign a UK credit card to my account before that "easy" trickery was in place. I managed that - with out it I couldn't listen to RTE Radio 1 as Alexa continually played RTE Radio 2.

The voice recognition is good (still not impressed with the Echo!!) and the sound quality is good (STILL not impressed) but having to find my iPhone to set it to the channel I wanted (and it doesn't have a "favourites" setting that I could find - so even when I had found my phone, fired up the app, I continually have to search for my channel before I can play it).

I have a Pure One Mini radio in the kitchen. All I have to do is press a button and Radio 1 is playing.

I'm sure in time it might work in Ireland but for now I'd give it the swerve.

I've just received mine via parcel motel .. Has anyone successfully set theirs up for Ireland? I have tried inputting my address (which shows up as a choice) but it won't set .. I've tried just random roads too .. again suggestions show up but won't set . Has anyone had any luck ?

I have seen other threads where this was discussed and it is a common complaint for Irish residents. Didn't read anywhere that it had been sorted. Maybe we need to move to the Uk. Works there. Or maybe a wee software upgrade compliments of Amazon!! Not much sign of that so far 😡😱
