I've come so far, I have lost over 200lbs and I have skin hanging everywhere. I want to keep the weight off but I feel so awful because of it that I fear my depression and bipolar will have me gaining back the weight. I don't have enough money to do this, I don't know what to do. I have a full medical card, do you think they would cover the procedure to remove the excess skin?

Wow, well done on losing so much weight! What an achievement.

I dont know anything about medical cards or any of that craic just wanted to say well done.

I would hope though that they would give consideration to the fact that your mental state would suffer greatly without this procedure. Its more than cosmetic in that regard.

    Good luck.

    Don't think so. See here

Aye I saw that, though I thought it may be different as a pregnancy belly is not really on the same level. I hate to be graphic but this is a lot of excess skin. It's so bad that when depressed I imagine going to the ER and taking a scalpel to my stomach just so they have to take it off.

Thank you John that means a lot! :)

I'd be probably be addressing the depression first with the GP.

Aye I have a psychiatrist, I have bipolar but one of the better medications for depression gives an intense craving for carbs... so it sucks :/

Well done that is amazing weight loss! In a case like yours where u have put in serious effort like that it should be done on the medical card IMO.

All you can do is speak to your GP about this.
You can't refer yourself to a specialist and ask them to treat you under the public system
Your GP would have to refer you to the specialist and you will have to get in a queue if one exists.
You'd nearly be better off getting a quote from a specialist, getting a loan and getting it done privately

You can ask for a referral but do be aware it could take years to be seen. I do know of people who've been seen by a plastic surgeon for breast reductions because it was causing physical pain so they might help you but the list will be long.
