Listened to an interesting powerlifting podcast yesterday that was interviewing Barry Pigott (Irish 93kg IPF lister, owner of 200kg competition bench) here. It was mainly about how he is a strong as he is and how he can bench so much. Well worth a listen. But skip past the first 5-10 minutes until it gets to Barry talking.

    Some cliff notes:
    • Could bench 100kg at 14 years old
    • Once did Smolov Jr for all 3 lifts concurrently for 9 months. A typical Monday would be 6x6 @70+% for all 3 lifts in the morning, followed by a day of work, followed by driving 1 hour in the evening to row with his local rowing club
    • Loves milk. Would drink 6 litres driving from Cork to Dublin
    • High pain threshold due to rare condition. Once scalded himself with a hot water bottle that was on his skin without realising it
    • Never really got full time coaching. Has relied on hints and tips from fellow lifters for most of his career

The Cliff notes are that he's a freak of nature.

Have that lined up but that's mental about the pain/scalding.

Edit: There's a recent video on Instagram where he squats 277.5kg and the spotters can't quite believe the speed

"that deadlift felt weird" - 15 plate on one side matched by a 10 on the other. Good job. Maybe i should put the weights down and back away

You think that's bad. A good few years ago I done that on a squat. Except instead of doing the reasonable thing and looking at the weights to see what was going on I just shifted myself to the side till it felt fairly normal. Dono how I didn't end up killing myself on that squat!. Only noticed after my reps.

I wish online trainers were more transparent about costings. How much is your service ffs?!

Nothing like a belt squat machine to make you realise how pitifully weak your quads are.

    What's a belt squat machine?

You could do it using a couple of blocks (>18") with a gap between, a dip belt and a weight.

Or, if you're McGuyver, a hair clip, some blue tack and a pen.

Looked at the Google images of it. Still don't know how it works.

This is a belt squat minus machine.

Much less of a toll on your back and more quad-focussed.

Trap bar is a similar movement pattern but it still loads the spine. Belt squats are really useful if you have some sort of upper body injury but don't want to skip leg day.

Mike Tuscherer has done a variation of them a good bit recently, a good few videos on his instagram:

T-bar, not trap bar. I.e. landmine. Use belt to attach to the bar, so you don't need to stand on blocks and risk them moving.

if you're going to train your legs twice a week say. Would you be better off varying the exercises or sticking to the same exercises to maximise your improvement in them

    eg

Sample Day 1 - Squat, RDL, Split Squat, Good Mornings
Sample Day 2 - Squat , Deadlift, Lunge, Glute/Ham Raise

Am I making sense? It's off season training for a sprinter, in case that's relevant

    Ah right, sorry.
I actually thought T-bar was an odd abbreviation as it also means something else.

Looks a decent variation. The boxes in my gym are the soft kind. Wouldn't trust them.

T=trapezoid. So, "trap bar" is quite correct in my opinion.

Hmm. I googled "gym t bar" and got both t-bar row machines and trap bars. How about we call them landmines and hex bars.

If I was as strong as I was pedantic, I'd have wada knocking on my door.

A trap bar is shaped like a trapezoid. Also know as a hex bar.

A T-Bar is an older piece of kit shaped like a "T". Looks like this

They aren't very common these days so most people use a barbell wedged in a corner or a landmine for T Bar rows.

Is it not called a hex bar because it has six sides (and therefore is not a trapezoid/trapezium which has 4 sides)???

I didn't think trap meant trapezoid?
