Anyone here regularly doing reverse hypers for their back?

    I find them great.

Even on a reverse hyper machine constructed from pallets and carpet :)

Can't say I do them but I did their cousin (oooh matron), back extensions and they brutalised me. Possibly in a good way.

Difene and ibuprofen are NSAIDs. What makes ibuprofen more effective for nerve pain?

My bad. Didn't realise difene was also an anti-inflammatory. Thought it was just for pain.

I've only ever got it in spray form.

I have upgraded to plywood and some insulation foam.

Anytime by lower back feels tight I can free it up with them

Difene is much stronger than over the counter stuff

    Keeping the injury theme going.

MCL tear confirmed. "Moderate grade" which I think is grade 2. Which is exactly what I expected.

But thrown is as a bonus extra is a grade 2 LCL tear. Medial Meniscus tear. Balls

Your knee must have been up like a balloon.

IIRC I had something similar back in the day.

Was only slightly swollen. The trauma was very very direct to the MCL. Popped neurofen throughout the day as I was wine tasting.
The MRI report mentions some slight swelling and fluid internally. And some bursitis and synovitis - but I think they were existing.

When it happened me, the trauma/kick was to the LCL and the knee bent inwards, tearing the MCL. Swelled up sharpish and couldn't bend my knee within an hour. The absence of Nurofen didnt help

I've had 2 meniscus tears tidied up. The recovery is actually grand if it's just the meniscus.

I've had 3 tears tidied up also, all on the same knee! As Brian said, recovery is grand. Mine took a good bit longer than expected, but it wasn't a tough recovery

Reading about those back injuries makes me feel glad I've never had any sort of back pain at all from lifting. Now if I could say the same about my knees...

My foot/shin was pulled to the side and forward, as my knee was stuck in place. Same effect, the knee was "opened" up on the inside.

Getting stiffer now (oohh matron...), prob need to get back on the drugs and start heat packs to flush the build up.

I had to cycle home after the training, which meant somehow going uphill for most of the journey...probably didn't help.

I don't think I did anything properly in the short term after it happened. I didn't have any heat pack. Possibly gave it 10 mins of a bag of mixed veg...

That was nice lunch. Subway were doing samples so I was able to have a pre sandwich sandwich!

It's more the MCL I think. I tore the other one 3 years ago, it recovered fine on it's own.
Hoping meniscus is minor enough to avoid surgery.
Going back to GP tomorrow, and see what they think. Then probably pay for a second opinion from a specialist if not referred.

I'll need to get health insurance soon for tax reasons, I wonder if it's possible that I have an accident next month instead.

Or leave the collars off and leave yourself enough room to roll the bar down your body

Collars on/off don't really make a difference if you are rolling it down your body.
Only if you are going to dump to the side.

But I'd imagine neither was an option for that young lad.

I put them on for a potential roll of shame as if i dont it'll end up with one side tipped over then the bar might go flying

I've side dumped before. Bar doesn't go flying, or at it didn't.
One side slides off, then the other side hits the floor.

Maybe I'm wrong (and I'm sure there's a few freaks of nature out there too) but 98kg seems a fair bit for a 15 year old.

It's a "fair bit" alright. But it wouldn't be a Jaysus load.

Its heavy alright. And might have been too heavy in this instance. But it wouldn't be unheard of either. Especially among lads playing rugby at a serious level. Certainly not freak of nature stuff.

I had a quick glace at teenage records. And seen Jessie Norris benched 160 at 15 years old. That's a freak of nature.

I only caught the end of the prime time show last night ... for once a bit of a balance where it wasn’t all ‘drugs are bad’ ... but I’m not convinced about the extent of knowledge offered by the ‘juicing experts’

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 39,573 ✭✭✭✭Mellor

    Anywhere to rewatch?

or actually better yet, care to re-cap in a single paragraphs?

it was actually on the Claire Byrne Live show .. it's on the RTE player.

It was a small report by yer man Karl Henry (RTE's fitness 'expert') .. he said all the bad things - clots, depression, anxiety, depression etc ... and interviewed some body builder who had used them in the past and was saying that info should be out there for people who want to take them and with proper info it's safe.

They had a pharmacist in the studio who gave the official line - drugs bad etc.

The gym owner in studio seem to want to say they aren't the worst thing .. and tried to articulate his view using his own 'medical' knowledge.

it was more or less accepted that the availability and use of steroids is booming in Ireland and something needs to be done.

The pharmacist predictability said absolutely no and the fitness heads more or less said that info should be out there to use them safely.

While I think it is good to have the discussion ... the makey up science and medical information being given out by PTs who have studied drugs on Reddit and YouTube needs to be called out by real science.

I'm sure a lot of these PTs giving out 'facts' on drug use will also criticise the anti-vaxers for peddling pseudo-medical advice learned from facebook and online quacks.

Personally I don't have anything against anyone who wants to use PED's as long as they are transparent and stay away from tested feds, comps etc .. but I have a huge problem with self proclaimed experts who don't have any medical background. As a middle aged man I have no interest in drugs myself but would fear for the easily persuaded young fellas going in to gyms and being sold drugs by dealers who only want to shift product.
