Just wondering can any CX lads advise me please?
I'm thinking of doing Gaelforce Dublin and had a spin over the ground last Sunday,
The best description is that you have a lot of road (Cunard + other 15% grade hills), bombed road, soggy field and varying terrain on fire roads (ballinascorney wood) for short distances....
(total off road section can only be 6 km approx)
I tried it on my mtb but the weight and drag near killed me climbing.
I'm thinking my winter bike (Specialised Allez elite with 700's currently)with a CX tyre but I dont know any...I have gatorskins but dont want to cut them up...
Something cheap and cheerful too as they wont get any use afterwards.
    Any suggestions thanks

Schwalbe CX pro 30mm measure just under 29mm in both dimensions and are knobbly as a knobbler's knob. They're cheap too - if you wish you can measure the pair I have before you buy :)

On the other hand, you will clog your road brakes with mud in no time.

Not a CX racer, but do take in off road sections on many of my spins. If it is mostly light off-road I'd tend to go for the slightly less knobbly CX Comp over the Pro. Was running these most of last summer and found them reasonable enough on the road and plenty good for fire roads and dirt tracks. If it is dry before the day of your event, pump them quite hard, if it has been wet and liable to be very muddy, less so.

    slightly less knobbly CX Comp

    Are they road-bike-clearance-narrow enough?

Will you take them off? They will clog even when not used :P

I see you've never raced CX... ;) its not about aero, its about THIS:

    And they're open design calipers...

If the "bombed road" is really bad then maybe borrowing a CX bike with semi slicks is the way forward.
If the bombed road is the same go as standard Coillte Fireroad than Gatorskins will be fine.
If the soggy field is only the one field across, say 150m, I would run across it and keep the 25mm Gatorskins on the bike. All the fireroads should be managable. The course is mainly tarmac.
Spinny gears will be more important. Some of those roads are steep.

did you get any photos of the surfaces?
    and best of luck.

Peterx has a point here - I've done many gravel tracks ( Coillte stuff: Hellfire climb, parts of Tibradden, etc) on 28mm GP4000SII and they were fine...

Yeah was thinking of slinging it over the oxter too...as I can imagine if two people stop and walk everyone will be walking on certain sections..
I forgot my phone Sunday but will bring it this weekend to take photos...

Now who do I know who has a cx bike :D
