    Hi

an acquaintance with an interest in history has, what we think, is a brooch that was found by his mother when cleaning out the grate- from a turf fire. It has what appears to be a common double motif from the 17th C onwards, namely, an Acanthus leaf and Bear's Paw. There may have been an iron pin on the back judging by some rust, but it appears to be a copper alloy in the main.

    Any thoughts?

Take it to an antique jeweller? It could be quite pretty if it can be cleaned up properly.
