could anyone recommend a fairly decent silent generator to buy less than €500 that's good enough to use power tools and light work or they a waste of time thanks

Stay away from Chinese built generators...more trouble than they're worth. Pay the extra for a properly engineered model.

Stick to honda-powered types (and make sure it's a genuine honda and not a knock-off) and look at the better european or american brands. Also, make sure the generator is overpowered....in other words, make sure you have plenty of extra capacity.

Dont try to run it at near full capacity...aim to run it at no more than 75%. Remember also that anything with a motor will have a high initial demand at startup of maybe three times the ordinary running capacity....

With your 500 budget, I'd suggest a new well engineered model is out of Range, furthermore, the "silent" models are engineered to be quiet, this costs extra bucks.

I'd suggest a quality secondhand "noisy" generator would be value for money,
If silence is an issue, a simple hole in the ground does a lot to attenuate the noise.

Diesel models are noisier, more expensive, more reliable, and cheaper to run.

3.5 Kva would be a working minimum for power tools, 5 Kva better.
