Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Books about swimming?

    Hi all,

I'm just about to start Alexandra Heminsley's Leap In, about her experience learning to swim and then beginning to swim in open water, and it got me wondering what other books-about-swimming are out there and that people enjoy(ed)? I've read Lynne Cox's Swimming to Antarctica as well and loved it, and Leanne Shapton's Swimming Studies too.

Any recommendations, post them here - about open water swimming, competitive swimming, novels, any kind really...

"Where the crazy people swim" by Steve Walker (English Channel & North Channel amongst many other achievements) is a fascinating read into the gruelling training and psychology of long distance cold OW swimming.

Just browsing "Wild Swimming in Ireland", "50 places to swim in rivers, lakes and the sea by Maureen McCoy and Paul McCambridge. Some great locations

I really enjoyed leap in- I think especially as I did the same pool2pier course as her. Some of the things she talks about are a bit basic though. I think her other book is better.

That's good to know - I'm looking forward to getting stuck in. I guess as regards the basics, she did something similar in her other book about running I think - though I was an absolute beginner so I was lapping everything up, and maybe it is supposed to be similar for those who have never really swum before. Probably for us swimmers some things are a bit basic though! :)

well she seemed a bit obsessed with just getting her head in the water which i found slightly annoying!

He'll and High Water by Sean Conway was a good read. A pretty mad challenge to swim around GB and well written too. Certainly one to make you feel more adventurous!

Gold in the Water by PH Mullen, great book about the Santa Clara swimming team and the build up to the Sydney Olympics, focusing mostly on Tom Wilkens in the IM.
