Refund of credit

My parents recently switched to Bord Gais from Electric Ireland. There is still credit in the Electric Ireland account which needs to be returned.
Here is the problem. Electric Ireland want a meter reading from when the account was closed before giving refund. All EI bills have been estimates for a long time. When Bord Gais switched over they have been using estimates since November. So meter reading does not exist.
    What happens now?

    Hi there,

Thank you for getting in touch.

In the case of an estimation, the customer may have been underestimated or overestimated. As such, a refund cannot be provided until an actual meter reading has been provided. Where the correct meter reading at the time is not available, we may be able to use an up to date meter reading to determine if the estimation was in-line.

We recommend that your parents provide the current supplier with an up to date meter reading. The opening reading for the new supplier and our closing reading will need to be the same. If the meter reading is significantly higher or lower, the current supplier may opt to change their opening meter reading. If this is the case, they will inform Electric Ireland and a final bill will be reissued.

Do your parents know where the meter is located? Older houses typically have the meter inside near the fuse box. In newer houses, the meter will be outside in a white or grey box. You can find more information about reading electricity meters here and gas meters here.

All bills are based on meter readings even if these are estimated. Once you have an accurate meter reading, you can then compare the estimated reading on your closing bill and the up to date meter reading.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Thanks,
    Aoife
