Life Assurance Company - No policy

A relation had life assurance - now deceased. We contacted the firm and they will make a payment. However, we can't find the policy and we want to make sure the payment we are receiving is in line with the policy.

We have asked for a copy from the company - they say it is a highly unusual request and have said no. The deceased individual had never discussed the policy with us - we only knew it existed as he had a direct debit to the company.
Where do we stand? - do we just take their word for it?
    Thanks in advance

Is there a solicitor doing the probate? If there is, there is some chance that he/she might get a better response if they make a formal request in writing.

If you're doing personal probate then that type of response (PFO) is fairly typical from financial institutions. Get the executor to submit a written request, include a copy of the will (showing him or her named as executor) and see what happens.

Thanks for your reply. No Solicitor at the moment. Was hoping to avoid the expense. We just feel that we have to take their word about the payment and we have no way of checking if everything is in order - only their word. I can't see why they wouldn't let us see the policy - this makes us suspicious.
