Watched him twice for Egypt the last week or so....Very solid defender but he can't pass wind. Not sure if he would fit in or if he could be improved?

Always liked Hegazi. A lot of West Brom fans say he was probably their player of the season. I think he'd be a decent signing for a reasonable fee. I think commanding centre halves, even in reserve, will be a necessity being back in the PL.

Regarding Mings, it's still confusing as feck for a Dub like me to be happy for anything Tyrone......

Yeah, yeah, yeah I know GAA forum --->

John Percy has it that we're back in for Tuanzabe on loan. That would be great imo. Stretches the budget to cover other areas also!

Getting Tuanzebe back would be great. I've a feeling that will go right to the end of window though. With the mess United are in they'll want to look at everyone on their own tour and see who they can sign in the meantime.

Linked with Heaton today as well. A lot of this is guesswork from people though I think. Phillips reportedly turned down the contract offer from Leeds too.

I reckon the names floating around are certainly on the radar but clearly fighting against the tide to avoid crazy prices.

We may yet see some unexpected names crop up suddenly as the window plods on.

Looking likely that Steve Bruce gets the Bewcastk job, ohh that'll be nice to show our new style up against his lump it muck.

That is an amazing typo. I'm often bewildered at what my phone thinks it's autocorrecting.

On the news of Bruce, that'd be amazing. Helps my brother's are Newcastle (Bewcastk) fans, I'll give them a shout later to see how they're handling this news.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,142 ✭✭✭Patser

Jaysus what the feck is Bewcastk that my phone said, yes that's a normal word...

Edit: so when you Google Bewcastk it suggests so you mean Newcastle so maybe it knew what I meant

Would have preferred go after Butland because hes a lot younger than Heaton, but looks as though the club are trying to avoid becoming a laughing stock when it comes to getting hussled for transfer fees.

Hegazi links all over the place. Didn't realise he was only 28. Looks older than but similar to Colonel Gaddafi.

Heaton stories seem to have gone bit quiet but strong links around today that Ezri Konsa is close to joining from Brentford. £12m release clause, I think this will turn out to be a very astute move if confirmed.

Don’t know much about him but Smith certainly will.

Know little about him but wikipedia says 21 years old with 42 1st team appearances, so that ain't bad. I'd say he's our Tuanzebe in this squad. Mings the main man, Chester, maybe Cahill, our experienced reliable, Konsa the young upstart pushing them to perform. Also Hause in mix as our John O'Shea able to fill many positions

Edit: scratch that 113 1st team starts, 42 with Brentford, 71 with Charlton, so that's even more impressive for a 21 year old in a position that normally requires strength.

Konsa is a super ball player. Good enough to play in the midfield if were stuck. Seen Brentford 5 or 6 times last year but no team really put the back 4 under pressure, dont think I seen then let a goal in now that I think of it.

Janson is heading to Brentford now for 5.5 million. Have to say, what a well run club. 6.5 million profit, on letting 1 go and bringing in a very good replacement. If Maupay could get a few goals away from home they'd have been in the playoffs.

Tammy didn't even make the bench tonight in Bohs.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,247 ✭✭✭Esse85

Adomah has signed for Forest, hope he does well there.
Can't remember the last player to run from the half way line, past all 11 opposition players and put the ball in the net.

    Cheers Albert.

I'd imagine he's less training done than others. He was at the u21 Euros with England.

Can't say I've seen too much of Konsa outside of maybe the odd game but he is highly regarded plays for the England U21s and at only 21 I would agree with the below from Patser
113 1st team starts, 42 with Brentford, 71 with Charlton, so that's even more impressive for a 21 year old in a position that normally requires strength.

It is also not a stop gap signing like Cahill (wouldn't have minded him myself tbh) and is a player who should also improve more. It is also someone who already knows the manager so should be able to adapt quickly. Decent chunk of cash for a young championship player too so you know they have high hopes for him alongside Mings in CB even if he is competing with Hause/Chester to get the starting spot each week. Finally with those four I would not be worried seeing one of them starting if Smith is rotating. No longer worrying if we need to rest Chester who was playing too much and his play was suffering as a result.

The Focus now will probably be back on a CM and GK. Top Targets were probably Phillips & Butland were the top targets, maybe we will see some development on Phillips now as they seem eager to get the players in early to have a chance to gel in pre season, plus Leeds might need the cash now to re-invest after losing a CB. I think Stoke would have to drop their demands to 20m for Villa to bite before they have shifted their own keepers but looking at the money they have spent on a young CB pairing, I could see them going that high for a young English national team keeper. Everything could have a knock on effect though, Leeds dropping their demands on Phillips could free up some GK money or vice versa if Villa sign a cheaper keeper.

Have seen it suggested that Konsa can play DM position, and is comfortable there. Maybe he'll fit in there?

Perhaps but I’m sure we won’t be lumping our Premier League eggs too heavy in that basket and will sign another specialised player (looks like it will be Phillips).

Have seen a lot of people online criticising the amount of signings being made, but I remember even back as far as the end of January, when promotion looked gone, that it was readily acknowledged that this was gonna be a summer of huge change.

That has only been accelerated by the need to step up to a whole new level, and players like Whelan and Adomah who may (or may not) have gotten another season out of us at Championship level had to be replaced also.

gary cahill would be great addition , experience etc badly needed in the squad
wages must be huge or you would imagine more clubs would be after him

I had been in favor of his signing on a 1 year deal but I Can't see another CB signing now seeing as Villa already signed 3 this window (once the Konsa deal goes through - iterally on transfermarkt.com a minute ago and it updated itself to show him now as a Villa player).

Read somewhere Cahill has been on 85k per week and I'd imagine he is trying to get something similar given no transfer fee. I think Konsa is only on around 10k a week at Brentford

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,058 ✭✭✭Brian201888

Think we just need a keeper and the back is sorted, we've two left backs even if I don't rate Taylor, assuming Guilbert is decent like he's meant to be then him and Elmo are enough at right back and Mings Chester/Konsa with Hause in reserve should see us ok. Obviously a couple of injuries and we look a lot worse but that's the same for everyone in the bottom 10 really.

Get Philips and a right winger and we're almost sorted. Massive overhaul but it was well needed and happy to see us signing players that you'd assume won't be a financial liability if we go down.

A striker would be the cherry on top

Rumoured to be a 12m deal for konsa. Can't fault the board for spending money but this seems on high side?

It was his release fee, think they'd have wanted even more ideally

I think a lot of the criticism online is from fans of other teams, who simply see the amount of players released and signed and think we're doing a Fulham and trying to replace the whole team. They're not aware that a fair few of our signings were on loan, and therefore part of the successful team or that many if those released were really on edge of team and needing replacement.

It's a bit like the Mings signing. A lot of comment online from non Villa fans amazed that we paid so much for an out of favour Bournemouth player, while every Villa fan is delighted to have him as we've seen what he brought to team over last 6 months.

It kind if shows how out of the spotlight a team goes when not in Premier League, other fans aren't really paying attention or know what teams want or need.

I know it sounds crazy given the amount of signings but I think a striker would be more than just the cherry on top. With Wesley new to the league and Kodjia not really Premier League level we badly need someone there for if Wesley doesn’t hit the ground running/gets injured.

This is a sh*tshow of a transfer window but the plus side is that given the age bracket of signings being made, if things go ok and Villa stay up, it should be tweaks rather than overhaul from here on out.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,142 ✭✭✭Patser

We still have Davis and Hogan, same as Kodjia untested at this level, but probably need moving on before replacing - although I still have hope for Davis

Really Kodjia and Hogan need to be moved on to move Davis into a clear 3rd choice option behind Wesley and a 2nd signing that provides legitimate competition.

Would prefer to have 3 strikers with 2 of them legitimate options than 4 where only 1 is a capable Premier League starter. If we want to do it but doing it without spending lots of money on Maupay or Abraham, Benteke could be a much cheaper option.

Seeing it reported that Villa's bid for Trezeguet has been accepted now.

If he signs, I'd expect a GK, CM (more DM tbh) and maybe one more (another striker maybe if Hogan for example moves on) and that'd be it.

Is Trezeguet the Benrahma alternative basically?

I can't see Hogan remaining as a Villa player.

I think another decent striker is most definitely needed.

I think I have seen him referred to as exactly that in a few reports. Due to where he has been playing he will be a big ??? for me but let's hope it's a gamble that pays off and he will offer something different to the squad.

Read recently that Brentford were dropping their demands (20m+) for Maupay to around 15m as he wants to move on given the interest in him. No idea if there was any truth in Brentford also having an interest in taking Hogan back but 5/6m plus Hogan for Maupay would be a great deal for me but will probably only happen in my imagination.

Phillips doesn't want to move anywhere unless his salary demands are not met. He's rejected their initial offer but it is more likely Leeds will work out a deal with him. Failing that he'd be for sale at not far off what they were quoting him, certainly well in excess of £20m.

Agreed, Hogan is on big money compared to the rest of their squad. If it were to happen nothing more certain than the fee we pay would be covering his excess wage for the remainder of his contract. I read he was on 45k per week after promotion. Brentford probably wont pay more than 15k per week. That's 5.5 million in excess wage that we would pay in the transfer fee.

Some French media saying Villa are in for Bjorn Engels who plays at Reims. He's a Belgian centre back.

DM is a position that badly needs a signing in there. Could be waiting for Phillips or doing one under radar of media, I hope so anyway.

I think Phillips will be more than happy to leave if he gets an opportunity to play Premier League while earning more cash. He may not pull a Koscielny/Griezmann on it but it will ultimately come down to whether Villa or Leeds can agree a fee. Leeds clearly aren’t eager to sell him but they’ll also have a price in mind at which they will change their mind and I heavily doubt it’s actually the 30 million that’s being reported.

Phillips may be a big part of that team but they could still so wonders with say 22-25 million people especially given the FFP frenzied financial environment that is the Championship at the moment.

Villa faced similar dilemmas with Grealish last summer but obviously Grealish was already much closer to the top half Premier League level then than Phillips is now.

Looking at another CB after getting Konsa, Mings and Hause makes me think that Chesters injury is worse than we were led to believe. I know he said he would always have to manage it but we might be worried that he won't be able to play for any sustained period of time.

And Mings with his history has never played more than a few games any season at top level either so we could conceivably be down to bare bones very quickly.

Think Hause is probably gonna be used more at LB, not that we don’t have competition there already but he has no hope against Mings in that LCB battle. I don’t know enough about Konza or that other potential lad to know where they come into the conversation to be honest.

Preston have accepted bids from Bournemouth and Villa for Callum Robinson? A few places reporting it.
